It Gets Better Project
Mission:
To show young lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals how happy and positive their lives can be — if they can just get through their teen years.
Background:
In September 2010, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry Miller to inspire hope in young people facing harassment because of their sexual orientation. Since its launch, the It Gets Better Project has inspired more than five thousand user-created videos, generated over fifteen million page views, and received submissions from celebrities, organizations, activists, and politicians, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the It Gets Better Web site can watch or upload videos, take the pledge to speak out against hate and intolerance, and check out the Making It Better blog. The site also offers resources for LGBT teenagers who need help, including information about the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization working to prevent suicide among LGBTQ youth, as well as a directory of LGBTQ-related events. All donations made through the site benefit the It Gets Better Project, the Trevor Project, and the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).
