Organic Farming Research Foundation
Mission:
To sponsor research related to organic farming practices, to disseminate research results to organic farmers and growers interested in adopting organic production systems, and to educate the public and decision makers about organic farming issues.
Background:
Concern about the negative effects of industrial agriculture is fueling the growth of the organic food industry, which not only raises safe foods but also helps small farms survive economically. The Organic Farming Research Foundation was established in 1990 to support organic-farming research and advocacy. Led by organic farmers, researchers, and activists from around the nation, the organization conducts a competitive grantmaking program to support organic farming research and education, and advocates for increased funding for publicly supported research in the field.
Outstanding Feature:
The OFRF Web site supports the group's efforts to educate the public and policymakers about organic farming and food. The site features an FAQ section called About Organic, also available in Spanish, as well as links to other Web resources focused on organic and sustainable agriculture. For policymakers and others seeking more in-depth information, the Publications section includes several reports on organic farmers. And the section devoted to OFRF's Policy Program includes statements on various policy issues, recommendations for the federal research program, and an overview of agricultural biotechnology issues.
