The foundation launched the Fund for Racial Justice and a Brighter Futures Fund for children two years ago in a bid to address the needs of groups that were found to be the worst off in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The foundation planned to begin distributing grants from the funds when they reached the $1 million threshold; both funds reached that threshold in January.

The Vermont Community Foundation (VCF) has announced the establishment of the David R. Coates Fund for Vermont Disaster Relief—a permanent fund ensuring Vermont communities and individuals have a reliable, immediate resource to prepare, respond, and recover when natural disasters strike. Coates was the founding chair of the Vermont Disaster Recovery Fund (VDRF), and his leadership was instrumental in the flood recovery efforts of 2011 after Tropical Storm Irene, according to the foundation. VDRF provided $6 million in individual assistance following Irene and $1.6 million to survivors of the flooding in 2023 and 2024, and more than $14 million has been raised and committed through VCF’s Vermont Flood Response & Recovery Fund. To launch the Coates fund at the VCF, the remaining funds in the VDRF will serve as seed funding, kickstarting its long-term impact.

The Parkersburg Area Community Foundation has announced the establishment of the Temple B'nai Israel Jewish Community Charitable Fund, a field of interest fund dedicated to supporting Wood and Washington counties by providing funding for hunger and food initiatives and projects and programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within these communities. The temple’s formation dates to the 1850s, when nearly one million immigrants came to the United States from Germany, including the first Jewish families to reside in the Parkersburg area. Despite a long history in the region, the Jewish population significantly fell by this century, and the temple building was sold in 2013. The congregation continued to meet for services and holidays through September 2024. It was then that the small congregation dissolved. The last members of the congregation wanted to keep their resources in the community, supporting important community projects, maintaining the name of the temple in the area, and returning to its roots of assisting those in need.
