Community Foundation Update (03/26/2022)

Alabama

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced that the Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services is accepting applications for its annual grant cycle. Established in 2010, the fund typically awards grants ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 in support of animal organizations in Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, and Walker counties. The deadline to apply is April 30.

Arizona

The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona has announced grants totaling $70,000 from its South32 Hermosa Community Fund to eight nonprofits in Santa Cruz County. Recipients include Family Health Care Amigos, Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest, Patagonia Creative Arts Association, and the Sky Islands Tourism Association.

The Arizona Community Foundation has announced the election of Monica Nuvamsa, Mitch Menchaca, and Anthony Sharett to its board of directors. Nuvamsa is executive director of the Hopi Foundation and has previously served as a manager for the Morris K. Udall Foundation’s Native American Congressional Internship program. Menchaca has served as executive director of the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture since 2018. Sharett is president of Meta Financial Group and Meta Bank.

California

The San Diego Foundation and the Dr. Seuss Foundation have announced a partnership to offer $1 million in grants to nonprofits supporting young children up to age 5 and their families in San Diego County. The 2022 Early Childhood Initiative Equitable Opportunities Grant supports nonprofit organizations implementing strategic efforts to build regional resilience by increasing equitable access to high-quality, affordable early education and support services for children and their caregivers. The partnership has enabled the expansion of this year’s Early Childhood Initiative grant, which will include a focus on building a strong foundation for literacy in the earliest years to ensure early grade-level readiness and access to opportunity.

Connecticut

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and its Nonprofit Support Program have announced that their Social Enterprise Accelerator, designed to help organizations expand beyond traditional grants and donations, are launching a matching challenge. The foundation will match dollar-for-dollar every dollar of start-up capital raised by the current cohort of nonprofits involved in the accelerator, up to 50 percent of each organization’s goal, not to exceed $20,000. The matching challenge runs through June 8.

Illinois

The Chicago Community Trust has announced a three-year funding commitment of $350,000 annually to the Wieboldt Foundation’s Capacity Building Organizing Cohort to enable seven community organizations to address the challenges in their communities while building lasting power. The new initiative is focused on providing essential resources to enhance the civic engagement infrastructure and capacity of a cohort of grassroots organizations annually. Grantees will receive $25,000 in general operating support as well as a weekly consultation with a coach and access to monthly workshops to strengthen their respective organization’s capacity and resilience. During the 12-month program, participants will develop and advance a civic engagement campaign. The seven organizations in the inaugural cohort are the Alliance for Filipino Rights and Empowerment, Black Oaks Center, Not Me We, People for Community Recovery, People Matter, Pilsen Alliance, and Working Family Solidarity.

The Peoria-based Community Foundation of Central Illinois (CFCI) has announced the selection of the 2022 Community Works grant recipients. The Community Works grant program was established in 2021 with an estate gift from Bob Gilmore, retired president of Caterpillar, Inc. With the gift, CFCI has established the Gilmore Fund, which will provide annual grants in perpetuity to organizations and programs that will maintain and enhance culture, improve society, and promote job creation and retention in the central Illinois area, including the Community Works grant. The Tri-County Urban League and the Minority Business Development Center will each receive $25,000 in support of efforts to help create and retain jobs in central Illinois.

Ohio

The Columbus Foundation has announced its latest cohort of Five Nonprofits to Watch, with an intentional focus on small-to-midsize organizations. The cohort includes Restoring Our Own Through Transformation (ROOTT), the Martin de Porres Center, Muslim Family Services of Ohio, Halt Violence, and Sanctuary Night. Each nonprofit will receive a $20,000 grant. This year the foundation is also offering each organization a consulting engagement to help address growth, capacity building, and sustainability. Over the course of 2022, each of the organizations will have the opportunity to work with a local strategy consulting and project-based delivery firm. Capacity-building projects will be selected by the organizations and reflect its greatest need.

The Cleveland Foundation has announced that the seventh biennial African American Philanthropy Summit, presented by the foundation’s African American Philanthropy Committee, will take place Saturday, April 30, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This year’s summit, “Philanthropic Equity: Making an Impact,” will have both in-person and virtual access and share information about how philanthropy can be inclusive, how equity influences philanthropy at multiple levels, and how transformational philanthropy can be for individuals, families, and communities.

Wisconsin

The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation has announced that its Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay has awarded its first grant cycle of 2022. Recipients include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Wisconsin, Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin, Literacy Green Bay, and St. John’s Ministries.
