Community Foundation Update (05/20/2023)
California
The San Diego Foundation and the San Diego LGBT Community Center have announced a challenge grant that will match gifts dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 in support of outreach and programming for LGBTQ youth in San Diego. The challenge grant is contingent on the center successfully raising $100,000 for its Hillcrest Youth Center, which opened in April, and the funds raised—including the challenge grant—will support programming and facility upgrades.
Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Pilar Lorenzana as its vice president of strategic initiatives. Lorenzana has more than 20 years of experience bringing people and organizations together to promote equity, health, and access to opportunity through urban planning, policy making, and systems change. Most recently, she served on Google’s global real estate team to create healthier, more sustainable, and more equitable communities in Sunnyvale and Mountain View.
Indiana
The Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) has named Jennifer Bartenbach as its next CEO, and the Indianapolis Foundation has selected Lorenzo Esters as its next president. The two leaders will succeed Brian Payne, president and CEO of CICF and president of the Indianapolis Foundation, who is retiring on June 30 after 23 years of service. Bartenbach has served as CICF’s chief financial officer and chief operating officer for the last 10 years. Esters brings more than 25 years of experience spanning the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, most recently as the chancellor for the Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis service area.
Michigan
The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation have announced $800,000 in grants to 36 organizations through the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Legacy Funds, which focus on regional caregiving, design and access, and youth sports across the Grosse Pointe community. Since the funds were established in 2016, more than 420 grants totaling $10.2 million have been awarded. The most recent grants include support for the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor, the Dementia and Alzheimer’s Resource Committee, SAGE Metro Detroit, and the Art Experience.
The County of Midland is renewing a partnership with the Midland Area Community Foundation to grant $1.4 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to local nonprofits, enabling them to continue providing vital services to Midland County residents. Applications for grants of between $100,000 and $150,000 are being accepted through July 15, 2023. Grants totaling $700,000 will be awarded in August 2023, and an additional $700,000 in grants will be awarded in the first quarter of 2024.
Mississippi
The Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) of Dallas has announced grants totaling $1 million in disaster relief, including $250,000 to the Community Foundation of Washington County in Greenville to assist with storm recovery in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, and other neighboring communities in Mississippi and Arkansas. In addition to the charitable donations, FHLB Dallas activated its disaster relief response programs, which include grants and low-cost loans through member financial institutions to address disaster recovery efforts in their communities. The support includes $2.5 million in small business recovery grants offered by members as well as assistance for affected employees of member institutions.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced that it received a 2023 Business Excellence Award in Philanthropy from the Omaha Chamber of Commerce. The award is part of the chamber’s annual tradition of recognizing area organizations in four categories: Leadership, Innovation, Philanthropy, and Sustained Excellence.
New York
The Rochester Area Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $143,403 to 12 local youth sports and recreation programs from its Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Legacy Fund for Youth Sports. The fund, established by the private foundation of the late owner of the Buffalo Bills, has invested nearly $1.6 million in Rochester-area organizations over the past six years. The latest recipients include Garth Fagan Dance, the Mary Cariola Center, Monroe Milers, and RiverFlow Soccer Club.
Texas
The San Antonio Area Foundation and the University of Texas at San Antonio Carlos Alvarez College of Business have announced a partnership designed to empower nonprofits through data visualization and analysis. The virtual 15-hour Data & Innovation Management 101 for Nonprofits certification program, to be launched May 31, includes in-depth instruction on topics such as data analytics, cybersecurity, and innovation methodology. Courses will be taught by faculty at the business college under the coordination of Kathryn Keeton, senior executive director of the college’s Center for Professional Excellence.
Wisconsin
The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region has announced that its Chilton Area Community Foundation affiliate awarded $74,647 in grants to 17 nonprofit organizations to improve quality of life in the greater Chilton area. Recipients include the Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity, Matt Kolbe Memorial Foundation, REACH-a-child, and Fox Valley Memory Project.
