Community Foundation Update (05/28/2022)
Arizona
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA) in Tucson has announced the addition of Laura Maher as major gifts officer and Jeanne Alegria as accountant. In addition, Natalia Gabrielsen has transferred from CFSA’s finance department to become a program manager in the community investments department.
Louisiana
The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced a $1 million grant to the Community Lighthouse Project, an initiative of Together New Orleans, as the lead investor and partner in getting the project off the ground. The largest single grant from its Disaster Response and Restoration fund following Hurricane Ida will create a community-wide network of nonprofit resilience hubs, each powered by commercial-scale solar systems with back-up battery capacity, that will be able to better provide assistance to surrounding communities during power outages.
Massachusetts
The SouthCoast Community Foundation in New Bedford has announced more than $514,000 in scholarships to 64 local students. This year’s recipients were chosen from a pool of more than 1,100 high school seniors and college students from across the region, representing 22 educational institutions.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $845,000 in support of 84 local nonprofits and neighborhood groups through its five Community Interest Funds. Recipients include A Mother’s Love, New Life Family Alliance, NOISE, and Well-Read Women of Omaha.
New Mexico
The Santa Fe Community Foundation has announced three rounds of emergency wildfire relief grants totaling $135,000 through its Community Resiliency Fund. The grants, which the foundation has awarded weekly since the beginning of May, support nonprofit organizations in Mora and San Miguel counties that are providing critical services to families affected by the ongoing Calf Canyon/Hermit’s Peak wildfire. Recipients include the Animal Welfare Coalition of Northeastern New Mexico, El Centro Family Health, Project: Camp, and Sunrise Kiwanis.
New York
ACT Rochester, an initiative of the Rochester Area Community Foundation, has announced that executive director Ann Johnson is retiring after 12 years. During her tenure, the community indicators project has become a trusted website and data resource for the nine-county greater Rochester region, helping inform and change local problem-solving and decision-making processes. The project was launched in 2009 by the foundation in collaboration with United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes.
Oregon
The Oregon Community Foundation has announced that the Climate Change & Health Habitats Collective Giving Group, a group of climate-oriented donors, has made 37 grants to 21 climate solutions and environmental justice organizations totaling $532,105 since 2017. The five-year milestone comes as the group awards 16 organizations grants totaling $216,500 this year. The funding supports climate action work to ensure that Oregonians, including communities of color and rural communities, can live and thrive in the changing climate. Recipients include Beyond Toxics and Climate Solutions.
Pennsylvania
The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that the inaugural winner of the Exposure Tongue River Artist/Activist Residency, a program of the foundation’s Exposure Artists Program, is Jasmine Green. The self-described “artivist” draws on lived experience for her artwork under the moniker Black Girl Absolute. The Exposure Tongue River Artist/Activist Residency is a partnership guided by a shared belief in the need to support artists from varying backgrounds and to advocate for racial justice in the arts community. During her stay in Dayton, Wyoming, Green plans to work on her book, A Field Guide for Blue Girls, a mix of art and poetry centered on how Black women navigate mental health.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Foundation has announced that Neil D. Steinberg will retire from his role as president and CEO of the state’s community foundation, effective May 1, 2023. As the foundation’s board of directors launches a national search for his successor, Steinberg will continue to lead the organization’s operations and strategies and offer transition support. He joined the foundation in 2008 after a career in the banking industry.
