Community Foundation Update (08/07/2021)

Arizona

The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in Tucson has announced grants totaling $72,000 from its South32 Hermosa Community Fund in support of Santa Cruz County nonprofits. Nine organizations will receive grants ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, including Border Youth Tennis Exchange, the Mat Bevel Company, the Santa Cruz Council on Aging, and the Patagonia Museum.

California

The San Diego Foundation has announced grants totaling $698,000 in support of nonprofits working to expand access to and instill a love of the outdoors in children and families who have been historically denied equal access to parks, outdoor education, or recreation opportunities. Awarded through the Opening the Outdoors Program, which connects, protects, and increases equitable access to the outdoors across San Diego County, grants include support for the Back Country Land Trust, the Earth Discovery Institute, Lumbercycle, and Outdoor Outreach.

Kansas

The Central Kansas Community Foundation in Newton has announced the appointment of Kim Stahly as its new scholarship program director. Most recently she served part-time with Mirror Inc., a nonprofit that addresses substance use disorders.

Massachusetts

The SouthCoast Community Foundation in New Bedford has announced 2021 scholarships totaling more than $540,000. This year's eighty-four recipients representing twenty-four educational institutions were chosen from a pool of more than six hundred high school seniors and college students from across the region.

Michigan

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced the additions of Carla Walker-Miller and David P. Larsen to its board. Walker-Miller is the founder and CEO of Walker-Miller Energy Services, which helps electric and gas utilities achieve mandated energy reduction goals that reduce energy waste, create local jobs, reduce the energy burdens on families, and cut harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Larsen is a senior partner of the Detroit law firm Bodman PLC. In addition, the foundation announced grants totaling $23 million in support of organizations working in the areas of the arts, civic life, education, health, human services, and youth services. Recipients include the Michigan Science Center, Africa-America Institute, Kids Kicking Cancer, and Bridging Communities.

Nebraska

The Omaha Community Foundation has announced the relaunch of a comprehensive platform to house its data indicator project. According to the foundation, the Landscape, a community-driven data project, presents credible, comprehensive findings to help residents better understand key quality-of-life issues for the Omaha-Council Bluffs area and inspire action. Originally launched in 2016, the site offers an enhanced user experience with interactive graphs, inclusive data on thirty-eight indicators, and access to in-depth research in eight policy areas.

Ohio

The Cleveland Foundation has announced the schedule for its 2021 annual meeting, presented by KeyBank, with free virtual community events scheduled during the week of August 23-28. The slate of programming kicks off Monday at 7:00 p.m. when Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson delivers the Robert D. Gries Keynote Lecture. Daniel Gray-Kontar, founder and executive artistic director of Twelve Literary Arts, will moderate the conversation with Wilkerson, who will be speaking about her book Caste and the country's racial moment of truth.

Pennsylvania

The Chester County Community Foundation in West Chester has announced ten grants totaling $59,000 through its Wentworth Association Fund for Senior Housing. Recipients include Barclay Friends, the Friends Association, Good Neighbors Inc., and Phoenixville Women's Outreach.

South Carolina

The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry has announced the appointments of Dafina Ward and Doug Wetmore to its board of directors. Ward is an attorney who currently serves as the executive director of the Southern AIDS Coalition in Birmingham, Alabama. Wetmore is a former executive vice president and chief financial officer for Griffon Corporation and serves on the foundation's finance and investment committee.

Wisconsin

The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation has announced the addition of Stephanie Free and Kari Olsen to its staff. Free will serve as the foundation's office administrative assistant, while Olsen will serve as a community engagement program officer.
