Community Foundation Update (07/10/2021)
Alabama
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced $60,000 in grants through its Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services, which has exceeded $1 million in assets under management. Since 2011, the fund has awarded more than $450,000 in support of organizations in Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, and Walker counties working to help companion animals such as dogs, cats, and horses. Grant recipients include Alabama Spay Neuter, Hand in Paw, Adopt a Golden Birmingham, and Special Equestrians.
California
The San Diego Foundation has announced the appointment of Christina DeBenedict as director of environmental initiatives, Jason Rogers as director of wealth advisor relations, and Lorena Nava Ruggero as director of communications.
Indiana
The Indianapolis City-County Council, in partnership with the Office of Public Health and Safety and Central Indiana Community Foundation, has announced the recipients of the first round of funding made available through the Council District Crime Prevention Grants Program. Administered by the Indianapolis Foundation, an affiliate of CICF, the grant program will support new or existing projects, services, and programs that show potential to reduce crime in Marion County — either directly or indirectly. Grantmaking will prioritize neighborhood-based, resident-driven, grassroots, and nontraditional organizations as a way of empowering neighborhoods to help build a safer community. Recipients include Believers United in Local Development (BUILD), the Capital City Church of Christ, Clean for Green, and Freewheelin' Community Bikes.
Massachusetts
The Boston Foundation has announced that its Equality Fund awarded $145,000 to thirty organizations in its 2021 round of grants. Grantees, who were recognized during the Equality Fund's Annual Pride Event, include the Bisexual Resource Center, Boston Pride, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, and Dancing Queerly.
Michigan
The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and the Pontiac Funders Collaborative — a group of funders managed by the foundation — have announced fourteen grants totaling nearly $117,000 to small and midsize nonprofits through the Capacity Building for Nonprofits grant program.The grants will strengthen internal capacity and professional development while encouraging collaboration amongst nonprofits in Pontiac. Recipients include Accent Pontiac, the Center for Success Network, Growing Pontiac, and the Micah 6 Community. To date, the collaborative has granted more than $1.3 million in support of economic growth and prosperity in the Pontiac community.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $83,000 from its Community Resilience Fund in support of seven nonprofits serving those disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Launched in April, the fund is focused on providing grants in the areas of arts and culture, housing, learning recovery, mental health, and workforce development. Recipients include Culxr House, Girls Inc. of Omaha, inCOMMON Community Development, and the Language and Culture School of Omaha.
New Mexico
The Santa Fe Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Christopher Goett as its new president and CEO, effective July 28, 2021. Goett will succeed Sue Coliton, who has served as the organization's interim president and CEO since September 2020. Currently executive director of the Wescom Foundation in California, Goett previously served as a senior program officer at the California Community Foundation.
North Carolina
The Foundation for the Carolinas has announced a final round of grants totaling $1.6 million from its COVID-19 Response Fund. The final grants targeted organizations that provide safety-net services such as housing and shelter, food, and emergency financial assistance, including rent and utility assistance. Recipients include Eliminate the Digital Divide, the Academy of Goal Achievers, Bags of House, and Furnish for Good.
Pennsylvania
As part of ongoing efforts to support a diverse array of artists and advocate for racial justice in the arts community, the Pittsburgh Foundation has launched Exposure: An Artists Program, which will provide approximately $395,000 in funding this year. Created in collaboration with the Opportunity Fund, Exposure will provide funding to artists to pursue new ideas, opportunities, and skills that are essential to the region's cultural vitality. The program will support artists working in all media, with preference given to those who identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color, and artists working individually or in collectives at the intersection of the arts and social justice, and it will offer funding to artists who have never received grants before. In addition, Exposure includes three co-fellowships that will place artists with established arts organizations to provide recommendations for addressing inequity and overcoming systems of oppression.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Commerce Department, the Rhode Island Department of Health, and the Rhode Island Foundation have established the COVID-19 Vaccination Incentive Fund, which is aimed at incentivizing COVID-19 vaccinations and assisting nonprofits that supported the general COVID-19 response and recovery. The fund's budget of $750,000 — which includes $500,000 from the state and $250,000 from the foundation — will be allocated in $10,000 grant awards to Rhode Island-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Up to five rounds of grants will be awarded each time the state administers an additional five thousand first COVID-19 vaccine doses as reported by the Rhode Island Department of Health.
