Arizona
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in Tucson has announced the winners of the 2020 Waters Excellent Educator Award and the 2020 Hiremath Student Integrity Prize. Ironwood Ridge Hill teacher Janet Ackerman and University High School teacher Marcos Flores were awarded the Waters Excellent Educator Award, which is given to educators nominated by their colleagues for teaching excellence and inspiration to students. The Hiremath prize for a student essay about integrity was awarded to Ironwood Ridge High School student Ben Hernandez and University High School student Camila Grubb.
California
The Orange County Community Foundation in Newport Beach has announced grants totaling $132,500 from its African American Alliance Fund in support of fifteen organizations serving Black communities in the region, in honor of Juneteenth and the fund's first anniversary. Recipients include the Learning Rights Law Center, Arts and Learning Conservatory, the G.R.E.E.N. Foundation, and the Council of African American Parents.
The San Diego Foundation has announced grants totaling $252,000 in support of eleven nonprofit programs in San Diego County working to prevent abuse, provide mental and behavioral health services, support early interventions, address trauma, and increase health equity for children up to age 5 and their families. Recipients include the Diamond Educational Excellence Partnership, Hannah's Family Center, the International Rescue Committee, and Promises2Kids.
Kentucky
The Shelby County Community Foundation, a regional affiliate of the Community Foundation of Louisville, has announced anonymous gifts totaling $1.4 million. The donation will go into the Partnership Grants Fund, and enable the foundation to more than double the amount it typically awards in a year, from an average of $55,000 to an estimated $200,000 a year for the next fourteen years.
Massachusetts
The Boston Foundation has announced the appointment of Kate Walsh, president and CEO of the BMC Health System, to its board of directors effective July 1. Walsh will succeed Charlesbank Capital Partners managing partner and co-founder Michael Eisenson, who has rotated off the board after ten years as a director.
Minnesota
The Minneapolis Foundation has announced that the WCA Foundation, one of its Signature Funds, has awarded $418,800 in grants to eighteen nonprofit organizations in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. Grant recipients include AVIVO, Canvas Health, Firefly Sisterhood, and Haven Housing. Established in 1866, the WCA Foundation is run by fifty female volunteers and works to improve the lives of women in Minnesota.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced the appointments of Micki Ambridge, Gail Graeve, Athena Ramos, and Jona Van Deun to its board of directors. Ambridge is the internal audit director at Kiewit Corporation. Graeve, who joined the board in late 2020, serves as vice president of social impact at Mutual of Omaha and executive director of the Mutual of Omaha Foundation. Ramos is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Promotion at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and is affiliated with UNMC's Center for Reducing Health Disparities and the Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health. And Van Deun was vice president of small business coalitions and engagement for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C., before she returned to her home state to serve as president of the Nebraska Tech Collaborative.
Ohio
The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty has announced that it is changing its name to Northern Cincinnati Foundation. The change reflects the fact that more than 50 percent of its charitable assets originate from communities across the northern Cincinnati region. Northern Cincinnati Foundation's new territory covers all of Butler and Warren counties, the northern portion of Hamilton County, and some of Clermont County. The foundation will maintain its existing partnerships in the West Chester and Liberty township communities while it continues to grow and expand into other suburban Cincinnati communities with similar charitable needs and interests.
Washington
The Seattle Foundation has announced that the Voter Education Fund, its partnership with King County Elections, awarded nearly $1 million in grants to help thirty local organizations provide educational information and register more than seventeen thousand people to vote. Recipients included the Refugee Women’s Alliance, Access to Our Community, Gay City: Seattle’s LGBTQ Center, and the Institute for Community Leadership.
