Community Foundation Update (08/14/2021)

California

The San Diego Foundation, LISC San Diego, and the Urban League of San Diego County have announced the launch of the San Diego Black Homebuyers Program, which aims to close the racial wealth gap in San Diego by investing in generational wealth-building opportunities through Black homeownership. Seeded with an initial pledge of $1 million from the foundation's Black Community Investment Fund, the program will work to advance wealth building and provide a stabilizing force for family, community, health, and self. In addition, financial institutions are partnering with the coalition as mortgage lenders and grantors. In addition to providing mortgage financing, a participating lender will provide at least $9,000 in grants for qualifying homebuyers and leverage matching grants through sources such as the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco's Workforce Initiative Subsidy for Homeownership (WISH) program, which offers eligible low-to-moderate-income households 4-to-1 matching grants of up to $22,000 for down payment and/or closing costs. By working together, partners can provide homebuyers with more than $70,000 in grant assistance toward the purchase of a home.

Connecticut

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has announced more than $3.8 million in one-year and multiyear grants to seventy-two local nonprofit organizations through its competitive responsive grants for 2021 — more than double the amount awarded in a typical year. The unprecedented increase in spending from the foundation's endowment was made possible by Stepping Forward, a three-year, $26 million commitment the foundation launched earlier this year to address the impact of COVID-19 and advance racial equity. Stepping Forward added $1.675 million to this year's competitive responsive grant program, which provides general operating support to nonprofits working in twenty towns surrounding New Haven. Recipients include Artspace, the Branford Electric Railway Association, the Connecticut Food Bank, and Ice the Beef Anti-Violence Organization.

The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that it raised $1.23 million during the #ONEDAY Critical Needs Alert online giving event earlier this month. In addition, every donation from $25 to $1,000 triggered additional funding from a $602,000 incentive pool provided by the Pittsburgh Foundation and its affiliate, the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, for a total of more than $1.83 million. The sixteen-hour event benefited 174 charities in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties that provide basic needs — food, housing, physical and mental health care, child care, and transportation — directly to vulnerable populations. For the first time, donors were able to search for organizations led by and serving Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), who have been facing disproportionate health and economic impacts from the virus.

Wisconsin

The Eau Claire Community Foundation has announced the results of its first-ever grant catalog, a new crowdfunding platform, which enables community members to contribute directly to requests from local nonprofits. In celebration of the foundation's twenty-fifth anniversary, there will be four grant catalog cycles over the coming year, one for each of its giving categories: create culture, form futures, give green, and offer opportunities. During the first catalog cycle, seventeen organizations took part and raised almost $60,000. In addition, the three organizations that raised the most were awarded bonus grants. The Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra was awarded a $5,000 bonus, the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library will receive a $7,000 bonus, and the Eau Claire Children's Theatre was awarded a $10,000 bonus. The recipients of three additional bonuses of $1,000 each were the Chippewa Valley Railroad Foundation, the Eau Claire Municipal Band, and Stand in the Light Memory Choir.
