Community Foundation Update (09/10/2022)

Alaska

The Juneau Community Foundation (JCF) has announced $28,646 in grants through the Douglas-Dornan Foundation Fund to 13 nonprofits in southeast Alaska. Since 1994, the fund has distributed $556,425 to organizations that enhance the health, education, and welfare of individuals in southeast Alaska. This year’s recipients include Brave Heart Volunteers, Juneau Youth Sailing, the Takshanuk Watershed Council, and Southeast Alaska Foodbank.

California

The San Francisco Foundation (SFF) has announced the appointments of Raquiba LaBrie as vice president of programs and Anand Subramanian as senior director of the People Pathway, the foundation’s grantmaking area focused on reducing the barriers to good jobs for Bay Area residents. LaBrie most recently served as a program director at the Evelyn & Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, where she focused on closing equity gaps for Black and Latinx students in the San Francisco Unified School District and creating a debt-free, equitable path to a college degree for students of color and people living on low incomes. She also worked for 13 years at the Open Society Foundations, where she launched and led several programs. Subramanian joins SFF after spending nine years at PolicyLink, most recently as managing director.

Illinois

The Chicago Community Trust and McDonald’s have announced that 40 Chicago-based nonprofit organizations that are addressing some of the city’s most pressing needs for “opportunity youth” will receive a total of $3.5 million in grants through the company’s Chicago Community Impact Grants Program. The funding will assist organizations that foster safe, healthy, and thriving community support systems for young people, particularly local Black and Latinx youth, who face multiple barriers to employment and education. Recipients include 100 Black Men of Chicago, Build Chicago, the Chicago Urban League, and Instituto del Progreso Latino.

Louisiana

To mark the anniversaries of hurricanes Katrina (2005) and Ida (2021), the two most devastating and financially costly storms to hit the state, the Greater New Orleans Foundation (GNOF) has announced $150,000 in long-term recovery grants to New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity. GNOF awarded $75,000 and the Jefferson Community Foundation, a supporting organization affiliated with GNOF, provided matching funds totaling $75,000 for rebuilding in the town of Jean Lafitte in Jefferson Parish.

Massachusetts

The Cambridge Community Foundation (CCF) has announced 23 CAMBRIDGE WINS Sports Equity Grants in support of local summer sports programs providing healthy, team-building activities for all youth and addressing inequities in access and opportunity in Cambridge. Established earlier this summer in partnership with CCF Advisors and Cambridge natives Joe Bradlee and Matt Meyersohn, the CAMBRIDGE WINS initiative awarded $18,000 to city agencies, nonprofits, and coaches and sports enthusiasts offering programs that engage and inspire youth in their community. Recipients include Cambridge Babe Ruth, CRLS Girls Soccer, Roll Bounce, and We Got Next.

Nebraska

The Omaha Venture Group, a giving circle established at the Omaha Community Foundation, recently celebrated its 20th grantmaking season, awarding $26,002 to four area nonprofit organizations. The recipients are Omaha Mobile Stage, Bags of Fun Omaha, the East African Development Association of Nebraska, and True Purpose.

Ohio

The Columbus Foundation has announced that it awarded nearly $244 million in grants during 2021, a record for the foundation. In addition, gifts made to new and existing funds and foundations held at the Columbus Foundation totaled $363,639,571 in 2021, also a record in terms of gifts received during a single year.

Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced the 2022 recipients of general operating support grants from the Mac Miller Fund, which was established by the musician’s family following his death in 2018 to carry on his artistic and creative legacy, primarily by supporting programs that help youth from underserved communities recognize their full potential. Recipients include Girls Rock! Pittsburgh, Steel City Arts Initiative, and Afro-American Music Institute.

Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Foundation has announced the inaugural round of funding from the Robert G. and Joyce Andrew College Scholarship Fund, which provides financial need-based scholarships to students who pursue undergraduate study at Bryant University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, Roger Williams University, the University of Rhode Island, or the Community College of Rhode Island. Nearly 90 students will receive scholarships totaling more than $470,000.
