Alabama
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced that its Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services has topped $1 million in assets. Since 2011, the fund has awarded more than $450,000 in grants to companion animal (dogs, cats, and horses) nonprofit organizations serving Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, and Walker counties.
California
The San Diego Foundation and the Brookings Institution have announced the launch of the San Diego Regional Policy & Innovation Center, a long-term partnership focused on conducting place-based research and policy analysis to help address the region's biggest problems and bring new federal infrastructure funding to the region. The center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization subsidiary of the foundation, will work to build partnerships to create cross-sector, multi-jurisdictional solutions to problems that require massive collective effort and extend beyond the reach of any single agency or department. These include regional challenges such as climate resilience; critical infrastructure; creating stable, high-paying jobs; homelessness; housing affordability; and health equity.
The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has announced that it awarded college scholarships to more than two hundred students for the 2021-22 school year through its Van R. Johnson Sutter Scholars program. Students receive between $1,000 and $3,000 to attend community colleges, four-year universities, or graduate programs. The program's competitive review process considered multiple factors, including academic achievement, school and community involvement, work experience, educational and career goals, and special circumstances.
Illinois
The Chicago Community Trust has announced that its We Rise Together initiative has awarded investments totaling $7.4 million in support of ten real estate developments in eight disinvested communities. The projects, set back by the economic impact of COVID-19, will now move forward, unlocking approximately $70 million in stalled real estate developments and have the potential to help catalyze change in the communities on the south and west sides of Chicago and suburbs by accelerating an equitable recovery in neighborhoods that have experienced decades of disinvestment.
Indiana
Hamilton County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Central Indiana Community Foundation, has announced grants and investments totaling $175,804 in support of Hamilton County nonprofits, projects, and initiatives. Recipients include Alternatives Incorporated, Faith in Indiana, Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry, and Million Meal Movement.
Kansas
The Hutchinson Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $13,000 in support of the Cancer Council of Reno County and the Fox Theatre. The foundation awards grants in support of an innovative approach or collaboration, a new efficiency, a critical need that requires funding, or an opportunity that needs local support to leverage resources for the community.
Louisiana
The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced artist Aron Belka as the inaugural COHN | GNOF | NOLA | ARTS Award program winner. Belka will receive $10,000 and be honored at a special reception at the foundation's Center for Philanthropy in 2022. The announcement was made on the centennial anniversary of the birth of Dr. Isidore Cohn, Jr., and the award is made possible due to a generous bequest from him and Marianne Cohn. In addition, the foundation announced grants awarded by the Cohn fund to the Ellis Marsalis Center, Cafe Reconcile, the Arts Council of New Orleans, the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), and the Isidore Cohn, Jr., MD Student Learning Center at the LSU Health Science Center.
Michigan
The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced third-quarter grants totaling $14 million in support of organizations primarily in southeast Michigan that are focused on the arts, civic life, education, environment, health, human services, and youth. Recipients include Last Straw Ventures, the Anti-Defamation League, Birth Detroit, and the Children's Center of Wayne County.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced grants in support of fifteen local organizations totaling $155,303 from three specialized grant funds: Creche Childhood Education Fund, Jetton Charitable Fund, and Richard A. Shaw Fund. Each fund supports specific programming in the community driven by the intent of donors who established the grant programs. Recipients include the African Culture Connection, Omaha Conservatory of Music, the Heartline Equine Therapeutic Riding Academy, and the Kids Can Community Center.
New Jersey
The Princeton Area Community Foundation has announced a $275,000 grant in support of a program to teach school staff across Mercer County how to identify students exposed to stressful or traumatic experiences and how to engage all students in a way that promotes healing from the mental health effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The Foundation for Educational Administration's Healing Centered Engagement initiative will be funded with a $137,500 grant from PACF's COVID-19 Relief & Recovery Fund and an additional $137,500 from a PACF fundholder who wishes to remain anonymous.
Virginia
The Community Foundation for a greater Richmond has announced grants of $1 million each to the Better Housing Coalition and Maggie Walker Community Land Trust, which work to increase affordable housing in the region. Funding will support construction of more than six hundred affordable apartment and housing units in the region, as well as financial coaching and wraparound support for residents.
