The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced a partnership with San Jose Public Libraries to restore the library accounts of more than four thousand young people and replace nine thousand lost items. During the spring, SVCF approached the city about working together to ensure that more youth and teens did not lose their library privileges. From those discussions, SVCF raised more than $153,000 for a designated San Jose Library Book Replacement Fund, which will be used to replace lost books and clear the fines on delinquent accounts. The library system also launched a "golden ticket" program that eliminated accrued late fees for an additional forty-three hundred patrons who signed up for the library's Summer Reading Challenge.

Established with a $1 million donation from the team, the fund will be administered by the foundation and will work with youth-focused organizations to provide educational assistance and resources to nonprofit organizations working to curb youth violence. The fund is named after longtime Indians player and Hall of Famer Larry Doby, the first African American to play in the American League, the second (after Jackie Robinson) to play in the major leagues in the modern era, and the second ever to manage a Major League Baseball team.
Pennsylvania
The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that a fund established nearly thirty years ago to honor former mayor Richard Caliguiri will support a $2 million research project at the University of Pittsburgh focused on finding a cure for amyloidosis, the disease that led to Caliguiri's death from heart failure while in office. Under the plan for this year, $460,000 from the Caliguiri Fund will be combined with a $275,000 grant from the Simeon M. and Katherine Reed Jones Fund at the foundation to begin building a research program devised by Dr. Mark Gladwin, chair of the university's Department of Medicine. The program's annual grantmaking budget of $70,000 to $80,000 will go to Pitt until the total reaches $1 million, at which point the university will contribute another $1 million to complete funding for an endowed chair named in honor of Caliguiri.
