Alaska

The Juneau Community Foundation and Douglas-Doran Foundation Fund advisor Paul Douglas have announced seventeen grants totaling $24,415 in support of organizations working to provide programs and services for youth in the southeastern Alaska. The fund has been making competitive grants annually for more than twenty years, providing nearly $400,000 in that time. This year, recipients include Artchange, the Chilkat Valley Preschool Building project, Parents for a Safe Graduation, and Juneau Jumpers.

Colorado

The Rose Community Foundation in Denver has announced the winners of its five-month philanthropic challenge, Innovate for Good, 2016. Through the challenge, a total of $250,000 in grants and support was awarded to six organizations working to empower youth to be change agents in their community. Six "youth-award partnership" awardees will each receive $30,000, while four "youth" awardees will each receive $5,000. In addition, all awardees and finalists will receive training, coaching and skill-building assistance from the San Francisco-based Youth Leadership Institute. Valued at $50,000, the training will focus on project implementation and creating positive social change. The six winners of the challenge are Community Cypher, Community Interpreters Project, Empowering Native Youth in Metro Denver, Neighborhood Harvest: Youth-Built Gardens, Thunderbolts Building Bridges, and Youth-Led Bicycle Repair Workshop.

Michigan

The Huron County Community Foundation in Bad Axe has announced fall grants totaling more than $16,000, including several in support of STEM education. Recipients include Laker High School, the Clover-N-Cows 4H Club, Ubly Community Schools, and the Greater Port Austin Art and Placemaking Fund.

Ohio

The Center for Community Solutions, in partnership with the Cleveland Foundation, has named the EDWINS Leadership and Restaurant Initiative as the winner of the Anisfield-Wolf Memorial Award for community service. The organization, which helps currently and formerly incarcerated individuals learn a skilled trade while removing obstacles to their transition back into society, will receive $25,000. Since the program was launched in 2013, EDWINS reports that none of its graduates have returned to prison and that program participants have a 97 percent job placement rate within thirty days of completing the program.

Oregon

The Oregon Community Foundation will receive $10 million as a result of a settlement the state reached with Oracle over the failed Cover Oregon health insurance exchange website, the Portland Business Journal reports. Part of a $100 million settlement reached in what has been described as a bitter legal battle involving multiple lawsuits over the website for the now defunct exchange, the grant will support science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education initiatives in the state’s public school systems.

Tennessee

The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis has announced the launch of Beyond the Classroom, an initiative aimed at building the capacity of local nonprofits serving K-12 students during their out-of-school time. In year one of the initiative, the foundation and localr nonprofits Latino Memphis, Porter-Leath, Literacy Mid-South, Communities in Schools, and Knowledge Quest will work with Seeding Success, another local nonprofit, to develop curricula and training. According to the Memphis Daily News, CFGM has committed $300,000 to the effort.

Washington

The Seattle Foundation has announced the first four nonprofits to participate in public radio station KEXP's relaunched Community Partnership Program. The organizations — Washington Bus, the Latino Community Fund, Open Doors for Multicultural Families, and Washington Low-Income Housing Alliance — have budgets of less than $2 million and are working to promote civic engagement and strengthen communities that are underrepresented in the democratic process. Through the program, each organization will be promoted online and on air at KEXP for a month, as well as at a live music benefit, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the organizations.

West Virginia

The Parkersburg Community Foundation has announced that the Doddridge County Parks and Recreation Commission has established a permanent charitable fund at its Doddridge County Community Foundation affiliate. The Friends of Doddridge County Parks & Recreation Commission Endowment Fund will be a long-term source of funding for the preservation and maintenance of the park.
