Community Foundation Update (10/18/14)

Colorado

The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County has announced that its Millennium Fund has surpassed $1 million in grants awarded. Established in 1999, the fund was created to offset anxiety surrounding the Y2K "bug" and encouraged donors to give the equivalent of their last hour of income for the year in support of the arts, the environment, civic involvement, education, and health and human services. This year’s three grant recipients, each of which will receive $25,000, are Intercambio de Comunidades, the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition, and the Child Learning Center at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Connecticut

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced grants totaling $500,000 to sixty-five organizations working to provide basic services to the community. Grants ranging between $3,500 and $15,000 were funded primarily through HFPG's Beatrice Fox Auerbach Foundation Fund to address immediate needs as well as food services during the upcoming holidays.

Fairfield County's Community Foundation has announced that it is rebranding itself to reflect its transformation from an organization that helps donors from the region with their philanthropic needs into an organization that conducts research on Fairfield County issues, launches initiatives, and creates partnerships to tackle critical needs in the region.

Kansas

The Central Kansas Community Foundation has announced that Jacob D. Goering has received the 2014 Faye McCoy Positive Aging Award from LeadingAge Kansas, a nonprofit support organization for retirement centers and nursing homes in the state. Goering, 96, is a board member of the North Newton Community Foundation, an affiliate of CKCF.

Massachusetts

The Essex County Community Foundation in Danvers has announced that Dave Welbourn is retiring on December 1. The foundation expects to announce his successor in November.

Nebraska

The Omaha Foundation has announced that its African American Unity and Futuro Latino funds have awarded grants totaling $270,000 to twenty-four organizations. Recipients include Compassion in Action, the Great Plains Black History Museum, Communidad May Pixan Ixim, and Mujeres Activas. In addition to funding, each grantee will receive membership in the National Association of the Midlands and is invited to participate in professional development opportunities that will focus on guidelines and principles, nonprofit financial management, communications and social media, and evaluation.

Ohio

The Richland County Foundation in Mansfield has announced the creation of a nonprofit capacity building program. The newly established Osborne Meese Academy, which received a startup grant of $96,450, will focus on three areas: education, professional support, and grant-writing assistance. Twenty nonprofit organizations in the county will be accepted into the program, which will allow two board or staff members per organization per session. The annual fee for the program is $250, and financial assistance is available.

Pennsylvania

The Erie Community Foundation has announced the appointments of Patrick Herr as director of community impact, Rachel Cacchione as community impact associate, and Kathy Jackson as grant and accounting assistant.
