Community Foundation Update (12/09/2023)
Alaska
The Juneau Community Foundation has announced that flood relief assistance is now available for those who were impacted by the glacial outburst that occurred this past summer. Through the Mendenhall River Flood Response Fund and other sources across the state, the foundation has received $28,300. Working with the Juneau Economic Development Council’s nonprofit arm, the Alaska Development Corporation, the funds will be used to provide limited assistance to anyone who experienced a major loss due to the flooding. The deadline to apply is December 31.
Colorado
Community Foundation Boulder County has announced grants to 145 organizations. The 2023 Community Trust grant recipients, selected by community volunteers, will receive a combined total of just under $400,000 to help address Boulder County’s most pressing needs. Recipients include the Colorado Pet Pantry, Boulder Ballet, Boulder Watershed Collective, and Teens, Inc.
Connecticut
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced that its Black Giving Circle Fund has awarded two grants totaling $30,000 to local nonprofit organizations. The recipients are the Brooks Token, Inc., which will purchase a commercial vehicle to deliver hot meals, and Rebuilding Together Hartford, which will provide home safety modifications for older adults and people with disabilities.
Indiana
The Community Foundation DeKalb County has announced that C. Isaac Schweitzer of DeKalb High School is the county’s recipient of the 2024 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship. Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are recognized for their community involvement, academic achievement, character, and leadership. Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides for full tuition, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years. The scholarship is for full-time undergraduate students pursuing a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.
Kansas
The Hutchinson Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $30,000 in support of 14 groups and nonprofit organizations serving Reno County. Recipients include Changemakers at Work, Creekside Neighborhood, Rise Up Reno Prevention Network, and Vierya Honors Foundation.
Maine
The Maine Community Foundation has announced that its president and CEO, Deborah Ellwood, has been appointed by Governor Janet Mills to the Maine Climate Council, an assembly of scientists, industry leaders, bipartisan local and state officials, and engaged citizens charged with developing and implementing Maine’s plan to address the impacts of climate change, build resiliency to climate effects, and meet state statutory targets to reduce carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2030 and at least 80 percent by 2050. At its September board meeting, the foundation initiated a strategic area of focus on climate, committing financial resources, grants, investments, advocacy, collaborations, and partnerships toward a better climate future for Maine.
Massachusetts
The Cambridge Community Foundation has announced two new rounds of grantmaking to local nonprofits to address pressing community needs and shore up the nonprofit ecosystem. Fifty-five community-based organizations will receive $389,500 in grants through the Community Fund to support general operations and programs in education, youth and workforce development, community building and engagement, food security, health and well-being, housing, environment, and arts and culture. In addition, $392,919 will be distributed to Cambridge Community Center, Food For Free, and Mystic Valley YMCA as part of the foundation’s food security infrastructure investments.
Pennsylvania
The Erie Women’s Fund (EWF), a field of interest fund housed at the Erie Community Foundation, has awarded grants totaling $40,000 boosting its total giving since 2007 to more than $1 million. EWF awarded $30,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania to expand its Child Feeding programming into the summer months. In addition, it awarded $10,000 to Operation Warm, which provides brand-new winter coats and shoes to local children in need.
