Community Foundation Update (10/22/2022)

Arizona

The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA) is accepting nominations for the 2023 Buddy Amos Founders and Civic Leadership awards. Established in honor of George H. “Buddy” Amos, Jr., a CFSA founder, the Buddy Amos Founders Award honors a nonprofit leader for inspirational leadership in the areas of community service, philanthropy, mentoring, collaboration, and/or systems change. The Civic Leadership Award honors community members who have inspired others through either their work, volunteerism, or advocacy efforts with diverse or underrepresented communities.

California

The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Kerry Wood as its new CEO, effective October 31. Wood currently serves as the foundation’s chief marketing and donor engagement officer and succeeds Linda Beech Cutler, who announced in March that she planned to retire after 10 years at the helm. Cutler will serve as an advisor to Wood and the foundation through the end of the year.

Minnesota

The Minneapolis Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $10 million in support of redevelopment and new construction projects led by small businesses and nonprofits to help three cultural corridors hit hard by the combined impact of COVID-19 and the destruction following the murder of George Floyd. The grants are funded by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development’s Main Street Economic Revitalization Program as part of a $96 million public-private campaign of grants and loans led by the Minneapolis Foundation in partnership with LISC Twin Cities, Propel Nonprofits, and community-led advisory committees.

Nebraska

The Omaha Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $487,639 awarded through its Fund for Omaha. Twenty-two organizations with a focus on promoting racial equity and social justice received grants of up to $25,000, including ACLU of Nebraska, Centro Latino of Iowa, Heartland Workers Center, and Refugee Women Rising. The foundation also published its 2022 impact report for its five community interest funds. Last year 87 grants totaling $845,000 were awarded through the African American Unity Fund, LGBTQIA2S+ Equality Fund, Futuro Latino Fund, Refugee Community Grant Fund, and Omaha Neighborhood Grants Program.

Ohio

Greater Toledo Community Foundation and The Blade—in partnership with the Center for Nonprofit Resources, the Anderson family, Waterford Bank, Buckeye Broadband, and WTVG-13abc—have announced the winners of the 12th annual Northwest Ohio Nonprofit Excellence Award, which recognizes local nonprofits for their contributions to the community. Connecting Kids to Meals received the award for Excellence in Collaborative Programming, Children’s Theatre Workshop of Toledo for Excellence in Strategic Action, and Adopt America Network for Excellence in Organizational Operations. The winners will each receive a $7,500 unrestricted grant from the foundation and a $1,000 unrestricted grant from the Andersons. Earlier this month, the foundation announced six grants totaling $120,450 awarded from its Equity & Access Initiative Fund. The recipients are Cherry Street Mission Ministries, Hope’s Landing, Reinvest Toledo, the Movement Team Lucas County, the University Church, and the University of Toledo Foundation.

Washington

The Seattle Foundation’s Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) grantmaking program, which invests in and partners with community members affected by poverty and racial disparities, is expanding into the SeaTac/Tukwila neighborhood, in addition to South Seattle, White Center, and Kent. Grassroots organizations serving the SeaTac/Tukwila area can apply for a N2N grant in early 2023, with quarterly deadlines on January 30, April 30, July 30, and October 30.

Washington, D.C.

The Greater Washington Community Foundation has announced the recipients of the David Bradt Nonprofit Leadership Awards, which supports senior-level nonprofit leaders in advancing their careers and leadership skills. Roopal Mehta Saran, executive director of Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, and Jim Knight, president and CEO of Jubilee Housing, will each receive up to $15,000 to attend an intensive executive training program of their choice.

Wisconsin

The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region has announced grants totaling $210,000 awarded from the Marilynn W. Taylor/Wohlt Cheese Fund, a permanent fund at the foundation. The grants will support four nonprofit projects serving the people of New London, Fremont, and surrounding areas: the Weyauwega Library ($100,000), Mosquito Hill Nature Center ($50,000), the New London Community Fund ($40,000 challenge grant), and the Fremont Area Historical Society ($20,000).

The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation has announced 12 grants totaling $30,700 through the Crime Prevention Foundation of Brown County with the aim of reducing or eliminating “the ability, desire, or opportunity to commit crimes.” Recipients include the Ashwaubenon School District, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Wisconsin, Brown County Sheriff’s Department, and St. John’s Ministries.
