Arizona
The Arizona Community Foundation has announced that Pats Shriver will retire as regional director of its Flagstaff affiliate on January 13, 2023. In her 11 years leading the organization, Shriver has helped ACF of Flagstaff grow its assets to more than $39 million.
California
The Marin Community Foundation has announced the appointment of longtime nonprofit official Janelle Cavanagh as chief philanthropy officer. For the last nine years, Cavanagh has held a number of positions at the Global Fund for Women, most recently as vice president, strategic partnerships. Prior to the fund, she was the director of national expansion for Coaching Corps.
Connecticut
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving (HFPG) has announced 27 grants totaling $263,000 to provide food and other basic human needs. This year, HFPG established a new approach to its annual Basic Human Needs Emergency Assistance grants to create a more open and equitable application process that involves two rounds of grantmaking. In prior years, all emergency assistance grants were awarded in the fall, but nonprofits provided feedback that having access to funds earlier in the year would help them in planning and meeting community needs. Recipients of the latest round of grants include North End Little Pantries, Advancing Connecticut Together, Glory Chapel, and Levo International.
Florida
The Venice-based Gulf Coast Community Foundation has announced that it is accepting applications for its 2023 Winter Gulf Coast Board Institute. The training will be conducted on Fridays from February 17 through March 10, 2023, at the foundation’s Sarasota Philanthropy Center and include the fundamentals of nonprofit board governance, financial and legal oversight responsibilities, and how to create a diverse, highly functioning, and engaged board. The deadline to apply is December 11.
Illinois
The HEPH Foundation, an education-focused foundation, has announced a $1.2 million grant from the How We Learn Fund, which is administered by the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation. The HEPH Foundation helps diverse students embrace STEM-related subjects by providing them with access to tools and new ways of learning that enhance current educational practices.
Indiana
The Central Indiana Community Foundation has announced that its Indianapolis Foundation affiliate awarded grants totaling more than $1.3 million to local nonprofits. Recipients include the George Washington Hub Club, Earth Charter Indiana, Health by Design, and Knot Today.
New Mexico
The Santa Fe Community Foundation has announced that its Native American Advised Fund (NAAF) has awarded $75,000 in grants to 10 Native-led and -serving nonprofit organizations across New Mexico. The 2022 grants, which range from $5,000 to $15,000, will support NAAF’s mission of enhancing Native lifeways and promoting the Indigenous core values of community, language, culture, and environment. Recipients include the Mountain Center, National Indian Youth Leadership Project, River Source, and the Santa Fe Indigenous Center.
Pennsylvania
The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced 49 grants totaling $1.61 million through Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh (ABAP), a joint program with the Heinz Endowments. The largest annual distribution in the program’s 12-year history will support the work of individual artists and collectives and provide project, planning, and operating support for arts organizations. Since 2010, ABAP has awarded more than $9.4 million in support of the acknowledgment, celebration, preservation, and perpetuation of Black culture. To that end, the funding has focused on helping build the careers of individual artists and increasing the sustainability of cultural organizations that support Black arts.
Texas
Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) has announced that president and CEO Dave Scullin will retire in March 2023. Scullin will continue his leadership role at CFT through March 3 to facilitate the transition while the board of trustees initiates a national search for a new president and CEO. CFT’s board chair-elect, Richie Butler, has been named chair of the search committee, with efforts currently underway to select an executive recruitment firm partner.
