Community Foundation Update (12/06/14)

California

The San Diego Foundation has announced grants totaling $369,000 to thirty local health and human service organizations. Awardees were nominated by leaders of the foundation's regional affiliate program in Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Escondido, La Jolla, Oceanside, Ramona, Rancho Bernardo, San Ysidro, and 4S-Ranch-Del Sur who identified nonprofits based on their knowledge of local needs and organizations able to meet them.

Connecticut

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has appointed Thea Montanez to its board of directors.

Kansas

The Wichita Community Foundation has announced that it delivered gold coins valued at approximately $1,300 on behalf of an anonymous donor who established the Gold Coin Society Fund with an endowment gift of $100,000. The first three gold coins from the fund were presented on December 1 to Guadalupe Clinic and both locations of the Lord’s Diner.

Michigan

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan in Detroit has announced that, in recognition of the twentieth anniversary of the HOPE Fund, which supports organizations working in the LGBT field, it has launched a program to match gifts from those who have never donated to the fund or who have not made a contribution to the fund in more than two years. Since its founding, the HOPE Fund has received more than $3 million in support of its endowment and grantmaking program, which has awarded $1.8 million to a hundred and thirty-one projects at forty-five nonprofit agencies serving southeast Michigan's LGBT population. 

Nebraska

The Omaha Foundation has announced that it has selected ten organizations to participate in the fifth class of its nonprofit capacity building program. During the fourteen-month program, the selected nonprofit executive directors will determine priority areas for capacity-building initiatives at their organizations, meet with their peers to discuss challenges, attend sessions designed to strengthen their organizations’ board leadership, develop a strategic plan, and receive a $5,000 grant for their participation.

New York

The New York Community Trust has elected Valerie S. Peltier as its board chair.

Oklahoma

The Kirschner Trusts Affiliated Fund, which is administered by the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, has announced grants totaling $354,075 in support of seventy-eight nonprofit organizations working in the areas of animal welfare, arts and humanities, community development, civil liberties advocacy, education, the environment, health services, Jewish organizations, social services, and youth development. Recipients include the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, the Kelly B. Todd Center, Friends of Eddie Warrior, and the Muskogee County Child Advocacy Center: Kids Space.

Pennsylvania

The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Foundation, has announced $150,000 in grants to nine projects through the Revitalizing Westmoreland initiative, a three-year effort to improve the lives of residents of Arnold, Jeanette, Greensburg, Latrobe, Lower Burrell, Monessen, and New Kensington — communities that have experienced significant declines in their manufacturing base and subsequent out-migration....
