California

The San Diego Foundation has announced that its 4SRanch~Del Sur Community Foundation affiliate has awarded $32,000 in grants to five local nonprofits. The recipients are the Zoological Society of San Diego, Junior Achievement of San Diego County, Oak Valley Middle School Music Boosters, SOLE Effects, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego.

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation in Mountain View has announced two education grants of $100,000 as part of a competitive grantmaking initiative marking its tenth anniversary. The Redwood City Library Foundation was awarded a grant in support of its Bridging the Divide initiative, through which laptops, Wi-Fi hotspot devices, and charging kiosks will be loaned out to low-income middle-school students at seven schools near the library's Fair Oaks branch. And with its grant, ACE Charter Schools, which operates four schools serving low-income San Jose neighborhoods and students who have struggled in non-charter schools, will build an online platform and mobile app called FamilyLink that makes it easy for students and teachers to set personalized near-term goals and track progress toward the ultimate goal of going to college.

Connecticut

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced a $50,000 matching grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in support of the Latino Endowment Fund at HFPG. Established in 2003 by Latino leaders in the greater Hartford area, the fund supports efforts to expand philanthropy in the Latino community and strengthen nonprofits working to improve the quality of life for Latino residents of the region. Over the past fifteen years, the fund has made grants totaling nearly $200,000 to Latino-serving organizations in support of a broad range of issue areas, including education, workforce development, and immigration.

The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has issued a request for inquiries for its First Years First early-childhood development initiative, the Hartford Courant reports. Through the call, CFGNB is seeking information about area projects and programs aimed at improving parenting education skills, increasing parental knowledge of child development, and raising awareness in the region of the importance of early-childhood education.

Illinois

The Chicago Community Trust has announced a $1 million dollar-for-dollar matching pledge from the Joseph Pedott Family Fundfor all donations to SGA Youth and Family Services. Pedott, the advertising legend behind the Chia Pet and the Clapper, was assisted in his youth by SGA. In 2012, he established the fund at CCT in support of SGA's education and scholarship programs, which help underprivileged high-school students attend and succeed in college. Pedott launched his advertising career while a full-time student at the University of Illinois at Chicago and credits his success in part to SGA, which helped him complete high school and enroll at UIC.

Indiana

The Central Indiana Community Foundation in Indianapolis has announced that the Women's Fund of Central Indiana, one of the foundation's special focus funds, has enlisted a range of community stakeholders participate in the Campaign to Change Direction, a national campaign focused on mental health. At the fund’s urging, nine cities, forty-six colleges, and hospitals, health departments, chambers of commerce, foundations, and businesses in the region have all pledged to advocate for open, honest conversations about mental health over the coming months. During 2015, more Indiana residents died as a result of suicide than died in car accidents. As a first step, partner in the campaign will work to help ensure that every resident of the region knows how to recognize and respond to the five signs of emotional suffering: personality change, agitation, withdrawal, poor self-care, and hopelessness.

Massachusetts

The Boston Foundation has announced that its Equality Fund has awarded grants totaling $88,000 to eleven Greater Boston organizations serving the LGBTQ community. Recipients include Home for Little Wanderers, Theater Offensive, Silver Lining Mentoring, and the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition.

Ohio

The Cleveland Foundation has announced a grant of $180,000 to Global Cleveland in support of the group's International Village, a neighborhood revitalization project on the city's near West Side. International Village comprises 2,661 properties — 31 percent of which have been foreclosed on since 2005. Using the often-untapped potential of immigrants to revitalize a neighborhood, Global Cleveland will work to create safe, affordable housing in the neighborhood while providing support services to new families moving in.

Pennsylvania

Bolstered by a matching pool of $657,000 contributed by the foundation and its donors, the Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that the Critical Needs Alert giving event in May set a record for donations, raising $1.3 million for nearly a hundred Allegheny and Westmoreland county nonprofits working to provide basic needs such as food, housing, health care, child care, and transportation to economically struggling populations in the region. During the sixteen-hour online event, more than three thousand donations totaling $616,000 were made, with all contributions of between $25 and $1,000 matched by the foundation.

Vermont

The Vermont Community Foundation in Middlebury has announced that Liz Gamache, Chelsea Bardot Lewis, and Kevin Wiberg will join the foundation's grants and community investments department, which is responsible for overseeing the programs that distribute grants and mission-related investments in the state. Gamache will serve as vice president for grants and community investments, Lewis as senior philanthropic advisor, and Wiberg as philanthropic advisor for community engagement.
