Day of Giving Raises $7.7 Million for Pittsburgh-Area Nonprofits

The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that its fifth annual Day of Giving raised $7.7 million for more than seven hundred nonprofit organizations in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.

Individual contributions made through the foundation's PittsburghGives Web site during the 24-hour event last week totaled $6.4 million — an amount that was matched by an additional $750,000 provided by the Pittsburgh Foundation and the Jack G. Buncher Charitable Fund, the Robert Waters Fund, and the Donald & Sylvia Robinson Family and Colcom foundations. The Day of Giving for Westmoreland event, which ran simultaneously, raised $480,000 and was matched by an additional $95,000.

The top recipient of funds was the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, which received $193,147 in online donations.

This year's Day of Giving event total topped last year's total of $7 million, due in part to an increase in the number of individual donations, which jumped to more than 19,100, from 17,700 in 2012. Gifts of less than $1,000, which accounted for $4.1 million of last year's total, accounted for $6.8 million this year.

"Our event this year clearly demonstrates that Day of Giving helps nonprofits increase the number of donors to their organizations and helps them grow individual giving and support," said Yvonne Maher, vice president of development and donor services at the Pittsburgh Foundation. "We congratulate and applaud everyone who gave and the nonprofits that organized themselves so well, again showcasing Pittsburgh's generous spirit."
