Grantmakers commit funds for relief efforts in Israel and Gaza
Several foundations and other grantmakers have announced gifts in support of relief efforts for victims in Israel and Gaza as violence in the region continues.
Google.org announced $8 million in support of local nonprofits providing relief to civilians affected in Israel and Gaza—$1 million raised by Google employees with company match, $1 million in donated Search Ads to nonprofits, and an additional $3 million each for organizations aiding victims in Israel and Gaza. Recipients include Magen David Adom, ERAN, Palestine Red Crescent Society, UNICEF in the State of Palestine, and Save the Children. Project HOPE has announced a deployment of staff to the region to address urgent needs, including emergency response personnel in Israel and Egypt to coordinate with local authorities, UN agencies, and civil society to deliver aid for both Israel and Gaza. The UJA-Federation of New York awarded approximately $12 million in grants in support of relief efforts in Israel, in addition to its recent $10 million pledge to organizations in the area. The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has announced $1.4 million in the first round of grants from $5 million in funding allocated. Jewish Federations of North America have announced that they raised $388 million and allocated $10 million to 20 organizations providing emergency relief and support in Israel, including JDC, World ORT, Israel Trauma Coalition, and Barzilai Medical Center.
In addition, the United Kingdom has announced a commitment of £10 million ($10.5 million) in humanitarian aid to assist civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Actors Blake Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds donated $1 million to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) “to help children in Israel and Gaza,” a source close to the pair told the Hollywood Reporter.
