Irvine Foundation awards $46.9 million in grants

The San Francisco-based  James Irvine Foundation has announced 14 grants totaling $46.9 million primarily in support of four initiatives that provide assistance to working Californians.

Funding awarded through its Better Careers initiative includes a three-year, $2.5 million grant to the Coalition for Responsible Community Development in support of pre-apprenticeships and career pathways for South Los Angeles residents facing barriers to employment. Through its Fair Work initiative, the foundation awarded a two-year, $11.15 million grant to Tides Center to provide financial support and organizational development assistance to worker rights organizations in the state. Through its Just Prosperity initiative, the foundation awarded a two-year, $2.05 million grant to Community Partners to deepen power building, advocacy, and data research among Native communities and organizations in California; and through its Priority Communities initiative, it awarded a two-year, $1.75 million grant to Kitchen Table Advisors to advance the economic viability of Latinx-owned farms and ranches in the Salinas Valley region.

Investments in Housing Affordability include a two-year grant of $7.5 million to the San Francisco Foundation to sustain and grow the capacity of statewide affordable housing and housing justice organizations. The Irvine Foundation also awarded a three-year, $8 million research and development grant through the Movement Innovation Collaborative to California Power Building Infrastructure Center to bolster the growth, long-term health, and level of collaboration among nonprofit leaders and organizations working with and on behalf of low-income communities in inland California.

In addition, the foundation awarded nearly $18.2 million in quarterly grants that did not require board approval.
