Kalamazoo Community Foundation Awards $2.1 Million in Grants
The Kalamazoo Community Foundation has announced second-quarter grants totaling more than $2.1 million to nonprofit organizations serving Michigan's Kalamazoo County, MLive.com reports.
The awards included nearly $313,000 in responsive grants in support of initiatives in the areas of education, community development, human services, and family and youth development. Recipients include the Crescendo Academy of Music, which was awarded $83,000 in support of its Marvelous Music! program; the Comstock Community Center, which will receive $82,000 for bilingual preschool programming; the YWCA of Kalamazoo, which will receive $80,000 for child care and education programs for homeless, transient, and precariously housed children in the county; and the Southwest Michigan Black Heritage Society, which was awarded $30,000 in support of "racial healing" initiatives.
According to the foundation, $900,000 in grant requests from local organizations went unfunded, which, said KCF vice president for community investment Suprotik Stotz-Ghosh, reminds us of "the importance of unrestricted gifts, or giving that enhances strategic investments in nonprofits."
