People in the News (12/26/04): Appointments and Promotions

The Phoenix-based Flinn Foundation has named LINDA J. BLESSING and DREW M. BROWN to its board. Blessing, retired executive director of the Arizona Board of Regents, directed the Arizona Department of Economic Security, was the state's deputy auditor general, and served on the governing board of the American Institute of CPAs. Brown, co-founder of DMB Associates, a Scottsdale-based real estate investment and development firm, serves on the board of the Phoenix Art Museum and chaired the task force that led to the formation of the Maricopa Partnership for Arts and Culture.

The Miami-based John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has named ANNE CORRISTON as community liaison program officer for Wichita, Kansas; Aberdeen, South Dakota; and Grand Forks, North Dakota; and BEVERLY BLAKE as community liaison program officer for Macon, Milledgeville, and Columbus, Georgia. Corriston previously was director of development and financial resources for Episcopal Social Services in Wichita and worked as a fundraiser for the Wichita Children's Home and Hospice. Blake, a senior vice president of Wachovia Corporation's charitable funds management group, previously served as vice president of foundations and endowments for Trust Company Bank.

Phoenix House in New York City has named HOWARD P. MEITINER to its board. Meitiner, COO of Long Island-based retail company Fortunoff, Inc., previously was CEO of beauty-products retailer Sephora and has focused his charitable efforts in the field of abused and endangered children.

The Institute for OneWorld Health in San Francisco has named WILLIAM A. HASELTINE to its board. Haseltine, founder and CEO of Human Genome Sciences, Inc., was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School for nearly twenty years and conducted some of the first research on AIDS. He serves on the board of the Brookings Institution, is a member of the Global Business Council on AIDS/HIV, and is the founder and a trustee of the Society for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.

In related news, PETER SMITH has been named Assistant Director-General for Education at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, the first American to hold that position. Smith, president of California State University at Monterey Bay since its founding in 1994, founded the Community College of Vermont and was a state senator and lieutenant governor of the state as well as a member of the United States House of Representatives. He will assume his position at UNESCO in July 2005.
