People in the News (5/01/05): Appointments and Promotions

The Rhode Island Foundation in Providence has named PATRICIA J. FLANAGAN to its board. Flanagan, director of the Teens with Tots Clinic at Hasbro Children's Hospital, is also co-director of the medicine/pediatrics residency program at Rhode Island Hospital/Hasbro and associate professor of pediatrics at Brown Medical School. She helped found Rhode Island's Statewide Coalition to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and previously served as president of the National Organization of Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting, and Prevention.

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has named BARBARA MISTICK as director. Mistick, a distinguished service professor of entrepreneurship and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University's H.J. Heinz School of Public Policy and Management, formerly directed the Girls' Math & Science Initiative and Seton Hill University's National Education Center for Women in Business. She will be the library's first female director.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, New Jersey, has installed JOHN J. PETILLO as president. Petillo, who was appointed last November and had served as interim president since June, was formerly chancellor of Seton Hall University, chief executive of Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, and president of the Newark Alliance.

In related news, WILLIAM C. RICHARDSON, president and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, Michigan, has been elected to the board of Exelon Corporation, a national electrical utility based in Chicago. Richardson, a professor of health policy and management, previously served as president of Johns Hopkins University, as executive vice president and provost of Pennsylvania State University, and as graduate school dean at the University of Washington in Seattle.
