People in the News (5/18/14): Appointments and Promotions

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation has announced the planned departure of its president and CEO, TOM McDONNELL, at the end of the year. Over the last six months, McDonnell and the foundation's management have been developing a long-term strategic plan that will require a multiyear implementation effort. Because McDonnell's personal plans do not allow for a long-term commitment, he will step down on June 30 and subsequently serve the foundation as an advisor. The foundation also announced that WENDY GUILLIES will become acting president and CEO, effective July 1, and will work with McDonnell and the foundation's management to formalize and begin implementation of the plan. At that time, the foundation's board will determine the approach and timing for naming a new CEO. "The board is grateful for Tom's contributions over the past two years, particularly in reconnecting the foundation to Kansas City, which is not only an important accomplishment but is something that Mr. Kauffman himself would appreciate," said Jan Kreamer, chair of the foundation's board.

The Washington Area Women's Foundation has announced the selection of JENNIFER LOCKWOOD-SHABAT as its fourth president and CEO. Lockwood-Shabat, who has been with the organization for six years, most recently as vice president, has devoted her career to improving the lives of low-income and underserved women and girls. "Jennifer brings vision, reputation, and personal and professional experience rooted in serving economically vulnerable women and girls," said Carolyn Berkowitz, the foundation's board chair and president of the Capital One Foundation. "We know that her extraordinary leadership capabilities will enable [the foundation] to innovate and thrive."

The NewSchools Venture Fund has announced the appointment of STACEY CHILDRESS as CEO. Childress joins NewSchools from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she led the team responsible for next-generation learning. Earlier, she served on the faculty of Harvard Business School, where she developed and taught a course on education entrepreneurship and advised large urban districts. During a decade in the private sector, she rose through the sales and management ranks at ADT Security Services and was on the founding team of an enterprise software company. She also was a substitute English teacher in a Texas public high school. "Stacey brings to NewSchools a deep understanding of education entrepreneurship and innovation, but it is [her] track record as a bold investor in people and ideas with the potential to accelerate learning for underserved students that has us most excited about NewSchools' next chapter," said NewSchools board member Dave Goldberg, who also serves as CEO of SurveyMonkey. Childress will succeed TED  MITCHELL, who was confirmed last week as U.S. Undersecretary of Education.

The Saint Luke's Foundation has announced the appointment of ANNE GOODMAN as president and CEO, effective August 1. Earlier, she held leadership roles at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, worked with Family Focus in Chicago, and served as a legislative aide to former New Jersey governor James J. Florio when he was a congressman (D-NJ). Goodman currently serves on the boards of the Ohio Association of Food Banks, Western Reserve Academy, and the Council of Economic Opportunities of Greater Cleveland. She will succeed DENISE SAN ANTONIO ZEMAN, who has been the foundation's president and CEO since 2000.
