Russian journalist’s Nobel Peace Prize medal sells for $103.5 million

The Nobel Peace Prize medal that Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov won in 2021 sold for $103.5 million at auction, with proceeds to support UNICEF’s humanitarian response to the war in Ukraine and affected regions, Barron’s reports.

The winning bid translates into 100 million Swiss francs. Heritage Auctions declined to disclose the identity of the buyer but said the funds have been remitted to UNICEF. Muratov also donated the $500,000 cash prize he was awarded for a total of $103.5 million. The auction house waived all fees and commissions.

“This remarkable contribution will help Ukrainian children survive this brutal war and, someday, rebuild their lives,” UNICEF executive director Catherine Russel said in a statement. “We hope Muratov’s gift inspires others to support vulnerable children in Ukraine and everywhere.”
