Superstorm Sandy One-Year Update

In the twelve months since Superstorm Sandy battered coastal areas of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, the American Red Cross has spent or committed funds totaling $280 million for emergency relief and recovery programs — more than 90 percent of the $308 million donated for Sandy relief efforts, the organization reports. According to Superstorm Sandy One-Year Update (12 pages, PDF), 34.2 percent of the funds were expended on short-term food and shelter assistance, 30.4 percent on individual casework assistance, 15.8 percent on housing and community assistance, and 11.7 percent on relief items. The remainder was used to pay for vehicles, equipment, and warehousing; physical and mental health services; inter-agency coordination; and community resilience programs. The update highlights the efforts of more than fourteen thousand Red Cross workers and volunteers to provide meals, shelter, and referrals to affected residents of the region, as well as efforts to help "muck out" flooded homes. The report also notes that the largest portion of the funds yet to be disbursed will be used to help people with housing-related expenses.
