Community Foundation Update (10/16/2021)

California

The San Diego Foundation has announced that it received grants totaling $250,000 in support of Child Tax Credit application outreach in San Diego County. The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, which is supporting similar efforts across California, awarded a $200,000 grant, while the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Funders Network awarded $50,000.

The Calaveras Community Foundation in Angels Camp has announced that it has awarded seventeen grants totaling more than $110,000 in 2021. Recipients include the Calaveras Humane Society, St. Patrick's Helping Hands, the Mark Twain Medical Center Foundation, and Feeney Park Foundation.

Illinois

The Community Foundation of Central Illinois in Peoria has awarded grants totaling more than $260,000 through the Community Needs, Local Jobs Fund, and Women's Fund Success programs to local nonprofit organizations providing vital programs and services to the central Illinois community. Recipients include the Center for Prevention of Abuse, the George Washington Carver Association, the Autism Collective, and Dream Center Peoria.

Louisiana

The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced the latest recipients of grants from its Hurricane Ida Disaster Response and Restoration Fund. Recipients include All Hearts and Hands, Rice and Beans Ministry, Emergency Legal Responders, and Uncommon Construction.

Maine

With a grant from the Maine Community Foundation and its Jean and King Cummings Fund, the High Peaks Creative Council has launched an effort to create fifteen quilt block murals, CentralMaine.com reports. Created and installed in Lexington Township, New Portland, Anson, Embden, Madison, East Madison, Solon, and Skowhegan, the quilts are part of a public art movement handed down through generations of families and rural communities. Earlier this year, workshops were held to instruct participants on the history of barn paintings, drafting designs, color theory, brush handling, and painting techniques. The council plans to put out a comprehensive map guide to include the new barn quilts.

Minnesota

The Community Foundation for Carver County in St. Cloud has appointed Khai Tran as its new executive director, Hometown Source reports. Over the past twenty-five years, Tran has worked with nonprofits, community interest groups, and government agencies to create sustainable impact in the community.

Ohio

The Community Foundation for Crawford County has announced the additions of Zach Chatlain, Kevin Kimmel, and Adam Paynter to its board of trustees. Chatlain is a CPA with Mizick Miller & Co. Kimmel is the superintendent for Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center. And Paynter is a physical therapist with Avita Therapy and Sports Medicine.

The Akron Community Foundation has announced that the annual For Women, Forever dinner hosted by its Women's Endowment Fund will be held on March 9, 2022. The event's keynote address will be delivered by Ernst & Young vice chair and U.S.-central region managing partner Julie Boland. Sandy Auburn, a retired philanthropic development professional and active community volunteer, will receive the 2022 Judith A. Read Tribute Award for Service & Advocacy for Women.

Oklahoma

The Oklahoma City Community Foundation has announced it will distribute $10.4 million to 371 charitable organizations serving central Oklahoma during its 2021 disbursement, a year-over-year increase of $1.4 million. The foundation's Charitable Organization Endowment program supports nonprofits in central Oklahoma working in areas including education, health care, social services, and arts and culture. Each year, beneficiary organizations receive a cash distribution equal to 5 percent of the fund's average market value for the previous twelve quarters, which allows them to benefit from the community foundation's general investment pool in years of exceptional investment performance like 2020, while remaining protected when the market is more volatile.

Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Foundation has announced a $250,000 grant to purchase thousands of naloxone (also known as Narcan) opioid overdose prevention kits for community-based recovery and harm reduction organizations across the state. According to the Rhode Island Department of Health, a record 384 Rhode Islanders died of a drug overdose last year, a 25 percent increase over 2019. Supplies of naloxone are seriously depleted, even as preliminary RIDOH data indicate that 2021 could be even worse.

West Virginia

The Parkersburg Area Community Foundation has announced a grant of $500 from the Robert E. Fouss Memorial Fund in support of the Children's Home Society's Arthur N. Gustke Shelter to purchase new shoes. The Gustke Shelter provides short-term housing and emergency care for youth in crisis. Fouss, who died in 1995, worked at several local shoe stores and became known for making sure any child in need received shoes. His children established a fund to continue their father's legacy.
