'Superstorm Sandy Two-Year Update'

Two years after Superstorm Sandy devastated parts of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, the American Red Cross has spent or committed 99 percent of the donations it received for relief and recovery efforts, the organization reports. According to Superstorm Sandy Two-Year Update (12 pages, PDF), $310 million of the $311.5 million raised by the Red Cross had been distributed as of August 31, 2014, including more than $107 million (34 percent of the total) to underwrite individual casework and assistance, $94 million (30 percent) for food and shelter, $50 million for housing and community assistance (16 percent), and nearly $33 million (11 percent) for relief items. The remainder was spent on vehicles, equipment, and housing; physical and mental health services; interagency coordination; and efforts to build community resilience. The organization also has committed more than $14 million to unmet-needs roundtables and long-term recovery groups in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut communities hit hardest by the storm.
