Community Foundation Update (07/30/2022)
California
The San Francisco Foundation (SFF) has announced an expansion of its work to advance racial equity and economic inclusion in the Bay Area. The foundation now automatically allocates a portion of its two long-term investment pools to its Bay Area Community Impact Fund (BACIF), which provides local nonprofits and social enterprises with low-interest loans. To start, SFF will allocate 1 percent of its Long-Term and Mission-Aligned Investment pools, representing more than $4 million in capital, to BACIF, with the goal of increasing the allocation over time to 5 percent from each pool, subject to demand for additional loans.
Colorado
The Arvada-based Community First Foundation has announced that it has awarded grants totaling $15,000 to 52 local nonprofits to help them build organizational capacity. Two-thirds of funded projects (66 percent) were focused on marketing and communications, followed by technology needs (13 percent), strategy (8 percent), development (7 percent), and staffing/human resources (6 percent).
Kansas
The Central Kansas Community Foundation (CKCF) has announced that Max Heinrichs will become director of its Hillsboro affiliate, effective August 1. Recently retired after 39 years in education, including the past six years as a superintendent, Heinrichs has served as chair of the Hillsboro Community Foundation for the past three years.
Maine
The Maine Community Foundation (MCF) has announced that the Maine Women’s Fund will dissolve this summer and transfer its $3 million in assets to MCF. The foundation will establish two field-of-interest funds, the Maine Women’s Fund and the Karen Moran Leadership Fund. The Maine Women’s Fund was established in 1988 as a fund at MCF and later became an independent organization.
Massachusetts
The Cambridge Community Foundation has announced the promotion of Lauren Marshall to vice president of marketing and civic engagement. For the past five years, she has served as the foundation’s director of that area and previously worked in communications at Harvard and Columbia universities.
New Jersey
The Community Foundation of South Jersey (CFSJ) in Haddonfield has announced that its South Jersey Covid-19 Response Fund awarded a $20,000 grant to Youth Advocate Programs, Inc. The funding will support Cumberland/Cape May County YAP, one of nearly 150 programs in 33 states where the nonprofit partners with youth justice, child welfare, behavioral health, and other systems to provide safe, community-based youth and family services. Cumberland/Cape May County YAP partners with the Cumberland County Juvenile Center.
Ohio
The Dayton Foundation has named a new chair and five new members to its governing board. David T. Miller will serve a two-year term as chair. A board member since 2013, Miller has chaired the foundation’s Finance Committee and Audit Committee and most recently served as board vice chair of the Executive Committee. Incoming board members, who began their five-year terms on July 1, are Art Harlan, Valerie Lemmie, Alice O. McCollum, Martha Shaker, and Joshua Stucky.
Oklahoma
The Oklahoma City Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $247,000 from its iFund Opportunities for Children program in support of 18 organizations working to provide opportunities and enrichment for children ages 0-14 who otherwise would not have access to them. Recipients include Citizens Caring for Children, Riversport Foundation, Jubilee Partners, and Peaceful Family Oklahoma.
Pennsylvania
The Erie Community Foundation has announced a $470,000 prorated match pool for the Erie Gives 2022 fundraising effort, which will take place on August 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Through the match pool, the foundation and its corporate partners add a percentage to each gift from the community. For example, in 2021, when the pool was $400,000, an online gift received an additional 4 percent and a gift by check included an additional 6.5 percent. In addition, the community foundations in North East, Corry, and Union City will add to the prorated match for their local nonprofits by $30,000, $20,000, and $10,000, respectively.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Foundation has announced that Jaychele Nicole Schenck will receive a Rhode Island PBS Foundation Scholarship. The $15,000 annual award provides support for up to four years to high school seniors or college students pursuing a career in broadcasting, communications, or journalism.
South Carolina
The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry has announced the addition of three new board members. Stephen C. Evans is a retired rear admiral of the U.S. Navy. Tray Hunter serves as vice president of marketing and communications at the Palmetto Electric Cooperative. And Lynn Jennings Taylor is a retired healthcare attorney.
