Community Foundation Update (07/02/2022)

California

The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has announced the recipients of the Gloria Burt Sacramento Region Arts Fellowship, a joint project of the Sacramento Alliance for Regional Arts, Blue Line Arts, and the foundation. Named in honor of an advocate for the arts who invigorated the area’s creative community until her passing in 2017, the fellowship provides a cash award to five artists in support of the development and implementation of their artwork. This year’s recipients are Teresa Forsyth, Amee Evans Godwin, Jaya King, Melissa Muganzo Murphy, and Omari Tau.

Connecticut

The Fairfield County’s Community Foundation has announced a $45,000 grant from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous to the CityCenter Danbury Farmer’s Market. Awarded through a donor-advised fund, the funds will enable the farmer’s market to accept and match Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits; match state Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers for low-income seniors and recipients of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children; provide Market Fruit & Veggie cash incentives for seniors and veterans; and offer virtual nutrition, health, and fitness information and classes.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced that the six nonprofit organizations selected in March to participate in its Social Enterprise Accelerator raised approximately $234,000 by the June 8 deadline, becoming eligible for more than $115,000 in matching grants. The foundation is matching 50 percent of every dollar of start-up capital raised by the incubator’s second cohort, up to $20,000 each. The participating nonprofits are CT Data Collaborative, End Hunger CT!, Hartford Food System, Health Equity Solutions, Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society, and YWCA Hartford Region.

Florida

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation in Venice has announced the election of David Green as board chair and Lisa Krouse as vice chair for one-year terms beginning July 1. Green has served on the board since 2018 and, as chair of the Governance Committee, led a Governance Review Taskforce overseeing the foundation’s board governance process. Krouse, who begins her fourth year on the board, currently is president and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County. The board also reelected Anand Pallegar to a third three-year term as a director and Peter Soderberg and David Sessions to second three-year terms as directors.

Nebraska

The Omaha Community Foundation has announced the election of three new members to the board. Jo Giles is executive director of the Women’s Fund of Omaha; Brady Marlow is senior wealth strategist on the Carson Private Client team and has his own practice in financial planning; and Daniel Padilla is co-founder of Lending Link, which helps to improve the finances of low- and moderate-income households. Retiring from the board are Deb Macdonald, board secretary and community leader; Ben Reynolds, director of business development at Sheppard’s Business Interiors, and Susan Thaden, president and CEO of CRi.

New York

The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties has announced the election of three new members to its board. Mike Hayduk serves as the deputy director of information directorate at Rome’s Air Force Research Laboratory. Kay Klo is executive interim director at Midtown Utica Community Center, where she assists refugees and impoverished populations through educational and cultural programs, referrals, and advocacy. Kathryn Zongrone is director of proposal development services at Head Global; she joined the board in December 2021.

Oregon

The Oregon Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Lisa Mensah as CEO, succeeding Max Williams, who is transitioning out of his role after a decade of leadership. Mensah has served since 2017 as president and CEO of Opportunity Finance Network (OFN), one of the nation’s leading networks of community development financial institutions (CDFIs). She previously served as under secretary of agriculture for rural development in the Obama administration and worked on rural poverty issues at the Ford Foundation.

Pennsylvania

The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County has announced grants totaling $162,600 for eight projects focused on community revitalization, including support for a small business center, improved access for people with disabilities, and job training opportunities for youth. Recipients of the Revitalizing Westmoreland program grants include Knead Community Cafe, Rostraver Township, New Florence United Methodist Church and Waypoint Youth and Community Center.

Wisconsin

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced an initial investment of $1 million in support of urgent healing, community building, and violence prevention programs as the first step in a multi-phase effort to deepen partnerships and support long-term systems change. The funding includes $465,000 to support grassroots organizations engaged in youth programming, violence interruption, and other activities that strengthen relationships and address trauma; $300,000 for the Violence Prevention Fund for Milwaukee’s Office of Violence Prevention’s intensive summer outreach strategy; $100,000 for Milwaukee Succeeds’ Youth Forward MKE Coalition to invest in youth-identified violence prevention programming; $100,000 to help families with funeral expenses for victims of violence; and $35,000 to support mental health and wellness among foundation staff. The foundation also will convene other funders, donors, and community leaders this summer to better address the root causes of violence in Milwaukee and secure investments to support sustained community-centered solutions.
