Alabama
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced grants totaling $1.386 million in support of 51 area nonprofits serving Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, and Walker counties. Recipients include STRIVE International, the Shelby County Arts Council, the Alabama Holocaust Education Center, and Black Warrior Riverkeeper.
California
The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Edward Wang as its vice president of donor engagement. Wang has more than 20 years of experience creating strategic bridges between the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors to achieve mutual social impact goals. Most recently, Wang served as director of corporate social impact at Tides, where he helped develop the portfolio of corporate partners and expand the scope of services to meet their evolving needs.
The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation (CCF), an affiliate of the San Diego Foundation, has announced grants totaling $90,755 to seven local nonprofits that provide opportunities to invest in, celebrate, and enhance the community of Carlsbad. Recipients include the Assistance League, Showers of Blessing, Mama’s Kitchen, and the Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad.
Kentucky
The Community Foundation of Louisville has announced that it is gifting two acres of land in the historic Smoketown neighborhood to two local nonprofits—Rebuilding Our Urban Neighborhood Dwellings (REBOUND) and the Louisville Association for Community Economics (LACE). The foundation received the land, valued at nearly $1 million, in 2015 from baseball bat manufacturer Hillerich & Bradsby to enhance the lives of Smoketown residents. It is the only post-Civil War neighborhood settled mainly by African Americans that remains in the city of Louisville.
Michigan
The Michigan Justice Fund, an initiative of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, has released its 2021 annual report and a video highlighting its efforts to advance justice reform. Since its inception in 2020, the Michigan Justice Fund has raised $18.3 million and invested more than $6 million in organizations across the state. Established to advance equitable justice policy and support transformational change taking place in Michigan communities the state, the collaborative now includes 14 national and local foundations.
Montana
The Greater Gallatin United Way (GGUW) and Park County Community Foundation (PCCF) have announced the creation of a fund to streamline support for those affected by the severe flooding southwest Montana. In less than 24 hours, the SW Montana Flood Relief Fund–Serving Park & Madison Counties received more than $350,000 in initial seed funding, including from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, Deborah Erdman, and the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, in conjunction with the Montana Rail Link, Willow Creek Ranch, and the Yellowstone Club Community Foundation. The funding will support immediate needs such as emergency shelter, drinking water, food, and clothing, as well as help with cleanup and rebuilding.
New Jersey
The Community Foundation of South Jersey in Haddonfield has announced the additions of Jeremy Grunin and Evan Linhardt to its governing board. Grunin is president of the Grunin Foundation, a New Jersey-based grantmaker focused on economic growth, and a partner of Grunin Holdings, LLC., which invests in third-party commercial ventures. Linhardt is vice president and wealth manager in the Philadelphia office of Bernstein Private Wealth Management.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Foundation has announced that it is awarding more than $360,000 in seed funding to 15 promising medical research projects. The work ranges from reducing post-traumatic stress disorder in new mothers following Cesarean sections to developing strategies to help people with Parkinson’s disease remain independent. Recipients include the Miriam Hospital, the University of Rhode Island, Providence Hospital, and the Women and Infants Hospital.
Texas
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has announced a total of $250,000 in emergency grants to organizations that are assisting victims and community members impacted by the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Grants of $125,000 each were awarded to the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country in Kerrville and Sandy Hook Promise Foundation.
Virginia
The Hampton Roads Community Foundation in Norfolk has announced the election of Sharon Goodwyn as board chair. She is the first African American and the first woman to serve in this position.
