Community Foundation Update (06/25/2022)
Arizona
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in Tucson has announced that it is accepting applications for the summer 2022 semester of its Nonprofit Leadership & Management Certificate Program in partnership with the University of Arizona’s Eller Executive Education program and the Center for Healthy Nonprofits. Established in January 2021 as part of the foundation’s effort to help local nonprofits recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program is free of charge. The deadline to register is July 22.
California
The Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $855,000 for phase two of its three-year, $30 million Forest Futures Campaign, a comprehensive playbook that can be replicated by other communities to align local organizations around minimizing the risk of extreme wildfires through better preparation, investment in forest health and infrastructure, and diversification of local economies. Second-phase grants focus on community protection, infrastructure, and accelerating the development of market solutions. Phase one, announced in April, awarded $1 million in grants to forest management projects. To date, $5.4 million has been raised in support of Forest Futures.
Louisiana
The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced grants totaling $93,000 through its LGBTQ Fund in support of 13 area nonprofit organizations. Established in 2016, the fund has awarded more than $552,000 to 41 organizations to date, with a focus on improving the quality of life and access to opportunity for LGBTQ individuals and families, particularly the most vulnerable members of the community, including elders, transgender youth and adults, LGBTQ people of color, low-income LGBTQ people, and LBGTQ persons who are disabled. The latest recipients include Covenant House, the LGBT Community Center of New Orleans, Project Peaceful Warriors, and Wake.
Massachusetts
The Cambridge Community Foundation has announced that it matched the first $2,500 raised by high school students during a fashion show fundraiser. Holding signs with messages such as #metoo, #StopAsianHate, and #BlackLivesMatter while wearing vibrant outfits, the students raised a total of $5,708 before the CCF match in support of Transition House and the Cambridge Women’s Center.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced that one of its support organizations, Front Porch Initiative (FPI), has joined with the city to create and preserve affordable housing and support access to it for renters, home buyers, and homeowners. To that end, FPI will match a $20 million investment from the city, using secured philanthropic contributions. The city also will apply for an additional $20 million available from the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.
New Hampshire
The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation has announced Mary Ann Dempsey as the 2022 recipient of the Caroline and Martin Gross Fellowship, which was established in memory of Caroline Gross, a former majority leader of the New Hampshire house, and Martin Gross, a former mayor of Concord. Dempsey is general counsel for New Hampshire’s judicial branch. Now in its 28th year, the fellowship, which covers the costs of participating in a three-week Senior Executives in State and Local Government program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, honors an elected or appointed official in New Hampshire who demonstrates leadership ability and the highest standards of integrity in his/her public service.
New Mexico
The Santa Fe Community Foundation has announced wildfire relief grants totaling $300,000 through its Community Resiliency Fund. The grants, which the foundation has awarded almost weekly since the beginning of May, support nonprofit organizations in the foundation’s geographic funding region that are providing critical services to families affected by the ongoing Calf Canyon/Hermit’s Peak wildfire. Recipients include the Animal Welfare Coalition of Northeastern New Mexico, Cornerstones, HELP New Mexico, and Hermit’s Peak Watershed Alliance.
Ohio
The Community Foundation of Lorain County in Elyria has announced a $1 million grant to the Mental Health, Addiction and Recovery Services Board of Lorain County. The largest single grant in the foundation’s history will be used to develop a comprehensive crisis continuum of care.
Texas
The Seguin Area Community Foundation has awarded grants totaling $42,000 to seven local nonprofit organizations, Seguin Today reports. Recipients include the Seguin Art League, the Heritage Museum, the Christian Cupboard, Seguin Youth Services.
Wisconsin
The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced that it is dedicating an initial investment of $1 million to directly respond to recent, escalating violence in Milwaukee and assist with urgent healing, community building, and violence prevention efforts as the first step in a multi-phase effort to deepen partnerships and support long-term systems change. It has earmarked $465,000 in support of grassroots organizations engaged in violence prevention, healing, and community building; $300,000 for a Violence Prevention Fund; and $100,000 to the Milwaukee Succeeds Youth Forward MKE Coalition, which will invest in youth-identified violence prevention programs that increase access to mental health supports. The foundation will build on the initial round of funding by convening other funders, donors, and community leaders later this summer to better address the root causes of violence in Milwaukee and secure investments to support sustained, community-centered solutions.
