Alabama
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced grants totaling $1.27 million in support of forty-two area nonprofits. Recipients include A Friend of Mind, Leaders of Excellence, Birmingham Talks, and IGNITE Alabama.
Arizona
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in Tucson has announced the addition of Erin Henderson as membership services coordinator. Henderson has served two terms in AmeriCorps VISTA in Tucson.
Connecticut
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced that its Black Giving Circle Fund has awarded grants to help ensure equitable access to health services and to create a monument in West Hartford. Grants were awarded to Health Equity Solutions in support of efforts to train and empower residents to advance the implementation of Senate Bill 1, which was enacted in 2021 to respond to significant racial disparities in healthcare access and delivery; and the West Hartford African American Social and Cultural Organization to fund construction and installation of a pedestal and a plaque of Rev. Lemuel Haynes in West Hartford.
Missouri
Forty-five fundholders as the Truman Heartland Community Foundation in Independence pooled more than $125,000 to help address the issue of unemployment and underemployment in eastern Jackson County, the Kansas City Star reports. In partnership with the Community Services League, Mid-Continent Public Library, KC Scholars, and the University of Central Missouri, the foundation established the Job Skills for New Careers initiative, which is aimed at improving economic stability by providing job seekers with a path to higher-paying, in-demand careers. The program offers tuition-paid, industry-recognized credentials as well as wraparound support services in five career paths: Certified Nursing Assistant, construction/materials handling, medical coding and billing, phlebotomy, and welding.
New Jersey
The Haddonfield-based Community Foundation of South Jersey has announced a grant to the Arc of Cape May County, which provides comprehensive services and supports to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to pilot Station MD, a telemedicine software designed to help people with disabilities understand and communicate with medical experts. The grant also enables the organization to work more safely with groups by reducing the need for personal contact during the pandemic.
New Mexico
The Santa Fe Community Foundation has announced that its Santa Fe Baby Fund, which provides support for infant and toddler well-being, has awarded grants totaling $45,000 to four local organizations. Recipients include Fathers New Mexico, Gerard’s House, Santa Fe Recovery Center, and Presbyterian Medical Services.
Pennsylvania
The Charles E. Kaufman Foundation, a supporting organization of the Pittsburgh Foundation, has announced scientific research grants totaling $2.1 million in support of research at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Washington and Jefferson College, Bucknell University, Drexel University, Pennsylvania State University, Swarthmore College, Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College, and Franklin & Marshall College. Established in 2005, the fund has awarded a total of $16.6 million since 2013.
South Carolina
The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry has announced that thirteen local nonprofit organizations have been awarded grants totaling $338,825 to help them continue addressing challenges created by COVID-19. The funding, part of a $5 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 grant the Town of Hilton Head Island received, has helped local governments respond to the impacts of COVID-19, including in the areas of health care, housing assistance, child care and education, rent and utility assistance, and food insecurity. A $1 million fund was earmarked for local nonprofits that provide services to low- to moderate-income residents. Initial recipients include the Hilton Head Island Recreation Association, Memory Matters, Second Helpings, and the Children’s Center.
Washington, D.C.
The Greater Washington Community Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $6.2 million to seventy nonprofits working to address issues affecting families and communities in the region. Recipients include Afrithrive, the Kid Museum, Homeless Children’s Playtime Project, and Rising for Justice.
