Community Foundation Update (03/30/2024)
Arizona
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in Tucson has announced that Carlos Ramirez and National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Southern Arizona have been selected as the 2024 Diane Lynn Anderson Memorial Award recipients. Established in 1990, the award honors individuals in the region who exemplify active acceptance, respect, compassion, and caring for people with disabilities. Ramirez is a music teacher in the Tucson Unified School District running a program where K-12 students with multiple disabilities have the opportunity to improve their cognitive skills through the practice of music. NAMI works to reduce stigma and improve access to support, among other things.
California
The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has announced five grants totaling more than $30,000 to ensure that students who love to perform have opportunities to pursue their passions. Through the Dennis Mangers Fund for Young Performing Artists, a charitable fund established at the foundation to help local youth access high-quality performing arts instruction, grants were awarded to the Mandarins of Sacramento, the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera, Sacramento Theatre Company, Studio T Arts & Entertainment, and the E. Claire Raley Studios for the Performing Arts.
Connecticut
The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has announced the addition of Michael Morand and Emily Wang to its board of directors. Morand is director of community engagement at Beinecke Library at Yale University, and Wang is a professor in the Yale School of Medicine and director of SEICHE Center for Health and Justice at the university.
Indiana
The Hamilton County Community Foundation (HCCF), an affiliate of the Central Indiana Community Foundation, has awarded $240,000 over three years in support of two nonprofits dedicated to enhancing the well-being of Hamilton County residents. Originally intending to offer a single grant of $40,000 over three years, HCCF decided to award two multiyear grants to Invest Hamilton County and Trinity Free Clinic.
Michigan
The Midland Area Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $282,000. Recipients include the Midland County Educational Service Agency, Friction Theater, Creative 360, and Adoption Option.
Minnesota
The Minneapolis Foundation has announced that the Fourth Generation giving circle has awarded grants to six area nonprofits. Recipients include 180 Degrees, the Lived Experience Advocacy Network, Onward Eden Prairie, Phumulani Minnesota African Women Against Violence, the Bridge for Youth, and United Renters for Justice.
Mississippi
The Community Foundation for Mississippi has announced that its Robert Malouf, Jr. Memorial Fund made its first grant, which will benefit the lives of individuals participating in the Mississippi Harm Reduction Initiative’s (MHRI) Recovery Housing Program. The funds enabled MHRI to create Robert’s House, a safe haven for men transitioning out of a 30-day residential substance abuse treatment program.
New York
The Rochester Area Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $379,898 to 45 local arts and culture organizations through a competitive grantmaking process. Recipients include Finger Lakes Opera, the Puerto Rican Festival, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Mozaic.
Ohio
Akron Community Foundation has announced that its president and CEO John T. Petures, Jr. plans to retire in the second quarter of 2025 after 17 years. From a low of approximately $100 million in assets during the Great Recession in 2008, the foundation has since grown to nearly $300 million.
Texas
The San Antonio Area Foundation has named Nadege Souvenir as CEO, effective April 15. Souvenir currently serves as chief operating officer of the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation.
