California

The Calaveras Community Foundation in Angels Camp has announced twenty grants totaling more than $110,000 in the areas of aging, community enrichment, and youth services. Grant recipients include the Calaveras Humane Society, the Calaveras Sings Theatre Arts Repertory, Gold Rush Writers, and the Manzanita Writer's Press.

The San Diego Foundation has announced that the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, one of its affiliates, is accepting proposals for projects aimed at building a more vibrant and civically minded Rancho Bernardo and that support music enrichment/appreciation or musical programs in the community. The deadline to apply is May 20 at 5:00 p.m.

Kansas

The Kansas Health Foundation has announced the launch of an initiative focused on building community capacity to address economic development in the state. Funded with a grant of more than $820,000, the Kansas Community Philanthropy Investors Network (KCPIN) will support training and peer-learning at eight community foundations in the state, a group that includes the Coffeyville Area Community Foundation, the Hutchinson Community Foundation, the Norton County Community Foundation, and the Topeka Community Foundation. Teams from each of the four foundations piloting the initiative have created six-month action plans that address a critical economic or community development need in their respective communities. Areas to be addressed include revitalizing downtown cores, strengthening local entrepreneurship, and leveraging technology to retain and attract businesses and residents to rural communities.

The Halstead Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Central Kansas Community Foundation, has appointed Macey Mueller as its new director.

Massachusetts

The Cambridge Community Foundation has awarded $944,378 in grants through its spring funding cycle, with $692,878 going to ninety-three local nonprofits and in support of scholarships. The grants were funded through the foundation's Community Fund, its endowment, and various donor-advised funds. Nonprofits working in the areas of education and out-of-school time received 25 percent of the dollars awarded through the Community Fund, followed by urgent and basic needs (17 percent) and arts and culture (12 percent). The foundation also awarded $196,600 in support of ongoing initiatives.

Nevada

The Community Foundation of Western Nevada has announced that it is revamping its community endowment, which supports critical community needs, including emergencies. Beginning this year, grants funded by the endowment will be selected by a fifteen-member advisory committee comprised of eight community foundation board members, three community foundation staff, and four members of the public representing diverse perspectives and communities.

New Hampshire

The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation has announced teacher Kristin Lizotte, who has taught first- and second-grade for twenty-six years, as the winner of the 2019 Christa McAuliffe Sabbatical. Created in honor of the Concord High School teacher who was killed in the 1986 explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, the sabbatical gives an exemplary New Hampshire teacher a year off with pay as well as a materials budget to bring a great educational idea to fruition. Lizotte's goal is to create opportunities for children to learn critical skills by having them participate in hands-on projects that combine subjects such as reading, writing, math, science, and social studies and connecting classroom teachers with like-minded colleagues around the state.

Pennsylvania

The Erie Community Foundation has announced quarterly grants totaling more than $2.2 million. Grant recipients include Community Shelter Services, Emma’s Footprints, the YMCA of Greater Erie, and Gaudenzia Erie.

Washington

The Seattle Foundation has announced the creation of a $1 million regional census fund aimed at ensuring a fair, accurate, and inclusive 2020 census count. To that end, the foundation has allocated $500,000 to the fund, which it will administer, while the City of Seattle and King County have each committed $250,000. Among other things, the fund will support community-based organizations working to organize, educate, and engage residents in historically underrepresented communities, including immigrants and refugees, communities of color, Native people, and members of the LGBTQ community.

Wisconsin

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation and the Medical College of Wisconsin have announced a joint vision statement and selected the Halyard Park neighborhood as the future home of their community-based partnership. The partnership, which encompasses an initiative formerly known as Flourishing Lives, will enable MCW and the foundation to implement strategies focused on improving the educational, social, and health and well-being of people in Milwaukee.

The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation has announced that its Women’s Fund of Greater Green Bay awarded nine grants totaling $57,000 in support of local nonprofit programs. Grant recipients include Franklin Middle School, Green Bay Sail and Paddle, the House of Hope Green Bay, and St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter.
