Alabama

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced grants totaling more than $1.3 million to 47 nonprofits serving Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, and Walker counties. Recipients include YMCA Birmingham, Dance Levels, Sight Savers America, and Miles College.

Arizona

The Arizona Community Foundation has announced that it awarded more than $115 million in grants, scholarships, small business relief, and loan distributions during the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2023. At nearly $34 million, grants in the area of health received the largest share of distributions, while nearly $27 million was awarded in the area of education, including grants and scholarships. Other focus areas include community improvement ($18.5 million), arts (nearly $8.5 million), and the environment (nearly $7.5 million).

The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona has announced that it awarded $20,000 in 2023 grants in support of rural arts programs. The foundation’s Endowment for the Arts awarded funding to Central School Project and Bisbee Radio Project, both in Bisbee.

California

The Marin Community Foundation, New York Community Trust, Pittsburgh Foundation, and Denver Foundation have established the Community Foundation Climate Collaborative. The effort aims to respond to climate change on local levels using all tools available, from awarding micro-grants to managing major gifts to leveraging community foundations’ historical strengths of stewarding the patient philanthropy of donors.

Connecticut

The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut in New London has announced grants totaling $2.2 million to help address inequities in early childhood care and education; youth development and empowerment; access to affordable, safe, and inclusive housing; access to high-quality and affordable health care; women’s and girls’ empowerment; and environmental resilience. Recipients include the New London Community Meal Center, Expressiones Cultural Center, the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters, and Discovering Amistad.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced $200,000 in grants to 11 nonprofit organizations in support of nonpartisan voter engagement activities leading up to the city’s mayoral primary election in September and general election in November. With more than 14,000 eligible, not-yet-registered voters residing in the city, the foundation’s Get Out the Vote project aims to encourage greater civic engagement and increase voter participation throughout Hartford’s local election season. Recipients include BSL Education Foundation, the Center for Latino Progress, FaithActs for Education, and Hartford Next.

Florida

The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties has announced a total of $6 million in gifts to various organizations in South Florida and Detroit, Michigan, from Julie Fisher Cummings, whose term as a board member will end on June 30. Cummings’ final act of leadership as board chair is a personal tribute to her late mother, Marjorie S. Fisher. The funds are on behalf of the Marjorie S. Fisher Fund at the community foundation and the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation and include $1 million to establish the Marjorie S. Fisher Opportunity Fund, which will offer wraparound services for students heading to college, including coaching and mentoring, and a total of $5 million to organizations including Take Stock in Children, the Lord’s Place, and City Year Detroit.

Illinois

The DeKalb County Community Foundation in Sycamore has announced a $20,000 grant to Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County to launch the Home Preservation Program, which will provide minor and major repair services to low-income homeowners to prevent houses from deteriorating. The repairs will help address health, life, and safety issues and keep families in their homes by protecting affordable housing stock.

Indiana

The Central Indiana Community Foundation has announced that its Hamilton County Community Foundation awarded grants totaling $164,500. Recipients include Noblesville Main Street, the Villages of Indiana, Westfield Washington Educational Foundation, and Trinity Free Clinic.

Montana

Whitefish Community Foundation has announced nearly $400,000 in grants to 46 local nonprofits. In addition to $270,701 in community grants and $12,500 in special awards, the foundation awarded grants of $50,000 each to Flathead Audubon for the conservation of the Owen-Sowerwine natural area and the Boys & Girls Club of Glacier Country for afterschool programming in Evergreen. Other recipients include Abbie Shelter, Bigfork Soccer Club, the Creative Arts Council, and Farming for Future Academy.

Pennsylvania

The Chester County Community Foundation has announced the first round of grants from its Jonas C., Marian D., and Robert H. Erb Charitable Fund to advance literacy, library services, and other education programs. A total of $140,000 was awarded to three organizations: the Literacy Council of Norristown in support of its One Book One Program, the Phoenixville Public Library, and RSVP.
