Community Foundation Update (07/29/2023)
Alabama
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced that its Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services has awarded more than $77,000 to 13 organizations. Since 2011, the foundation has awarded more than $580,000 in support of organizations in Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, and Walker counties working to help companion animals (dogs, cats, and horses). Recent recipients include Alabama Spay Neuter, Animal Savers of Pell City, Kitty Kat Haven, and Rescuers United for Furbabies (RUFF).
Minnesota
The WCA Foundation, a Signature Fund of the Minneapolis Foundation, has announced grants totaling $447,784 in support of 18 organizations focused on meeting the fundamental needs of women through economic stability, education, shelter, safety, and health programs and initiatives. Recipients include Alight, Dakota Child and Family Clinic, Family Tree Clinic, and Women’s Advocates.
New Jersey
The Princeton Area Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $250,000 in support of nonprofits providing summer initiatives that reach children and teens, including many whose families would not otherwise have access to affordable, high-quality programs. Funded through the foundation’s Community Impact program, the grants will support 26 summer programs offering arts instruction, academic enrichment, social-emotional learning opportunities, swimming, sports lessons, and other activities. Many programs also provide transportation and meals. Recipients include Artworks Trenton, Capital Harmony Works, HomeFront, and Snipes Farm and Education Center.
New York
To expand and enhance its support for counties in the greater Rochester-Finger Lakes region, Rochester Area Community Foundation has awarded a total of $140,970 to nonprofits serving Wayne and Yates counties. The infusion of grant dollars into these two counties is part of a new, intentional strategy to do more grantmaking in each of the counties in its service area outside of Monroe. The next round of grants will be directed to Genesee, Livingston, and Orleans counties.
North Carolina
The Iredell County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Foundation For The Carolinas, has announced grants totaling $185,500 in support of projects and programs focused on learning loss, veterans’ affairs, and human services in the county. Recipients include Veterans Bridge Home, Boys and Girls Club of the Piedmont, ElderCenter, and Insomniacs.
Ohio
The Dayton Foundation has announced grants totaling $802,600 to 21 Dayton-area charities through its competitive discretionary and Greenlight Grants programs. The majority of funding was made in discretionary grants, which totaled $750,000. Recipients of discretionary grants include Crayons to Classrooms, 4 Paws for Ability, Sunlight Village, and Wild Hearts African Farm. Recipients of Greenlight Grants, which provide small awards, include Brukner Nature Center, Good Neighbor House, Little Art Theatre Association, and Single Parents Rock.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Foundation has announced grants totaling nearly $350,000 in support of 45 human service organizations from its Newport County Fund. Recipients include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, Conexion Latina Newport, Gnome Surf in Tiverton, and the Little Compton Community Center.
South Carolina
The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry has announced the appointments of four new members of its board of directors. Laura A. Bush has served for more than 40 years in public service, including 26 years on the Beaufort Board of Education. Faye Gooding retired from Le Creuset in 2019 where she served as CEO of the company’s North American division. Judi Levy is a retired attorney. And Jim Wagner returns to the board after a four-year hiatus.
Texas
The Permian Basin Area Foundation (PBAF) in Midland has announced scholarships totaling nearly $1.2 million for the 2023-24 academic year. Since its inception, PBAF has awarded scholarships totaling more than $7.5 million to students pursuing higher education.
