Community Foundation Update (08/06/2022)
Alabama
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced that its LGBTQ Fund awarded a record $67,000 in grants to 13 area nonprofits in the past fiscal year. Since 2016, the LGBTQ Fund has provided more than $260,000 in support programs in Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, and Walker counties. The latest recipients include AIDS Alabama, Birmingham Black Repertory Theater Collective, Innovation Depot, and Teach for America Alabama.
California
The Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) in Angels Camp has announced the addition of three board members—the first new members since 2019. Mike Kristoff works for the Grupe Operating Company, specializing in diverse investments in multi-family apartments, commercial real estate, self-storage facilities, and agriculture. Bernadette Cattaneo owns The Lakes addiction treatment facility. And Debbie Strand serves as the coordinator of communications and student events at the Calaveras County Office of Education.
The San Diego Foundation has awarded $3.5 million in scholarships to 983 local college students through its Community Scholarships Program. Of the 2022-23 scholarship recipients, 69 percent are first-generation college students, or the first in their immediate families to pursue higher education, and 93 percent are considered low-income, according to their Earned Family Contribution data.
Maine
The Maine Community Foundation has announced that it is looking for volunteers to help review grant proposals to the Maine Land Protection grant program. In particular, it is interested in hearing from younger people, people who identify as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color (BIPOC) and/or LGBTQ+, as well as those from communities with limited access to green space and to explore the outdoors. The deadline to apply is September 23.
Massachusetts
The SouthCoast Community Foundation in New Bedford has announced grants totaling more than $2.5 million in support of 21 nonprofit organizations in the region. The 15th round of grantmaking from the foundation’s SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund includes awards to Brockton Day Nursery, the Old Colony YMCA, PACE, and Youth Opportunities Unlimited.
Michigan
The Community Foundation of St. Clair County in Port Huron has announced that the former Port Huron & Detroit (PH&D) Railroad Historical Society has closed its doors after awarding final grants totaling $85,500 to 17 organizations. The largest of the distributions is $35,000 to create the Tunnel City Railway & Transportation Heritage Fund at the community foundation in support of nonprofits caring for, preserving, and maintaining railroad, maritime, and military historical artifacts. Funds can be used for railway, military or maritime items such as signals, vessels, or locomotives on public display at museums or parks for historical interpretation and education.
Missouri
The St. Louis Community Foundation has announced that, in the wake of recent flash flooding, its Regional Response Team (RRT) initiative is working to build a centralized system of recovery response. To that end, RRT has launched a long-term recovery fund to assist residents who have been impacted by the flash flooding.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Foundation has announced that, to help address the surge in the cost of housing, food, and other necessities, it is boosting its funding for two programs by nearly 50 percent. Under the foundation’s Food and Housing Security Grants program, there are two pools of funds for agencies providing direct services to vulnerable Rhode Islanders: grants of up to $150,000 for agencies with a regional or statewide geographic reach and grants of up to $50,000 for agencies serving a municipal or a smaller geographic area. In addition, the foundation has increased the maximum grant for its Basic Human Needs Grants program by 50 percent, to $7,500. The program assists community agencies that provide emergency assistance to Rhode Islanders most in need, including food, clothing, housing, prescriptions, utilities, and transportation.
Wisconsin
The Oshkosh Area Community Foundation has announced that Badger Mining awarded three scholarships totaling $30,000 to recently graduated high school seniors. Each recipient of $10,000 will attend a four-year college or university and pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering or environmental science. The foundation administers the scholarship program.
The Community Foundation for the Fox River Valley has announced that its Women’s Fund has established a fund for the Monthlies Project, a community initiative that provides menstrual health products to students and works to boost awareness of period poverty and the educational inequity it creates. The Monthlies Fund will be a resource to schools and community programs in the area, and products will be sourced through local community partners. The Monthlies Project has set a goal of raising $100,000, which will supply approximately 625 girls with menstrual products for an entire year.
