Alaska
The Juneau Community Foundation has announced that its Douglas-Dornan Foundation Fund has awarded grants totaling $20,298 to twelve organizations that work to benefit and enhance the health, education, and welfare of individuals in southeast Alaska. Established in 1994 in memory of Brian Douglas and Wythe Dornan after the couple died in a car accident, the fund has awarded more than $527,000 to over a hundred organizations, programs, and individuals.
Arizona
The Arizona Community Foundation has announced that during the first quarter of its fiscal year (April-June), a total of $17,661,723 in grants and scholarships was awarded from the foundation's funds and those of its six statewide affiliates in Cochise, Flagstaff, the Gila Valley, Sedona, Yavapai County, and Yuma. More than nineteen hundred grants and scholarships were awarded in support of health innovations, community improvement and development, environment and sustainability, arts and culture, and quality education.
California
The San Diego Foundation has announced that it awarded a record $3.4 million in college scholarships to more than a thousand local students for the 2021-22 academic year. Among the scholarship recipients, 69 percent are first-generation college students and 96 percent are considered low-middle-income students based on their Earned Family Contribution data.
Colorado
The Community Foundation Boulder County has announced the recipient of its first Nino Gallo Leadership Award. Angela Maria Ortiz Roa was selected from a list of community leaders nominated as best exemplifying the attributes of Gallo, a longtime community leader who worked to advance and promote racial equity; he died in December of COVID-19. Ortiz Roa, a single mother who recently graduated from Metropolitan State College, has worked to expand environmental awareness and Latinx leadership in the Boulder community through her work with FLOWS — Foundations for Leaders Organizing Water and Sustainability — at the University of Colorado Boulder. She will receive a $1,000 gift.
Illinois
The Evanston Community Foundation has announced the addition of Laura-Min Proctor and Minya Nance to its board of directors. Proctor is managing director, wealth advisor, at William Blair investment firm. Nance serves as managing director, integrated student services, and assistant dean at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
Kentucky
The Community Foundation of Louisville has announced the recipients of its twenty-first annual Vogt Invention and Innovation Awards. Six early-stage companies will receive $25,000 in non-dilutive grant funding, participation in a ten-week accelerator program, start-up coaching, mentorship from industry veterans, strategic introductions, and recognition. The program will culminate with the introduction of the founders and company pitches at Demo Day on October 13. The winners are Black UX Labs, Gluconfidence, Legal Gantt, Sports Metaphor, Symba, and Yornest. The awards are funded by the foundation's Vogt Invention and Innovation Fund, an endowment established in 1999 by businessman and philanthropist Henry Vogt Heuser, Sr. to strengthen the city's economic health by providing funding and support to innovative startups and inspiring entrepreneurs.
Louisiana
The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced that Jeff Schiffman will join the foundation as vice president for communications and public affairs. Schiffman most recently served as director of admission for Tulane University's Office of Undergraduate Admission.
Massachusetts
The Cambridge Community Foundation has announced that it received grants totaling $1,000 from a Bank of America program that provides a $500 grant for each employee who volunteers more than fifty hours in a year. The funding is in recognition of the service of CCF trustee Katie Walker and Professional Advisors Council member Kevin Roszkowski.
Michigan
The Kalamazoo Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Chaney Bear as its human resources manager. Bear, who previously served in the Human Resources department at Gazelle Sports, also serves on the board of Girls on the Run of Greater Kalamazoo.
Washington, D.C.
The Greater Washington Community Foundation has announced an investment of $940,000 in seventeen Black-led organizations in the region working in the area of systems change. The one-year awards will help support organizations' immediate infrastructure needs, including staffing, strategic planning, marketing and communications, and professional development. Enabled by a gift of $1 million from Facebook, the foundation launched the funding opportunity in April. Recipients include Bread for the City, Critical Exposure, Harriet's Wildest Dreams, and Progressive Maryland.
