Community Foundation Update (5/24/14)

California

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has appointed Maeve Miccio as vice president of corporate responsibility and renamed her department. Miccio, who joined SVCF in 2012 as a corporate philanthropy manager, will lead a department of fourteen professionals who facilitated $31 million in grants to nonprofit organizations around the world in 2013.

Massachusetts

The Boston Foundation has announced a $50,000 Out of the Blue grant to Haley House in recognition of the agency’s multifaceted role in providing career and housing assistance to low-income individuals while creating a civic hub for Roxbury in the form of its Dudley Square café.

Nebraska

The Omaha Community Foundation has announced that it raised nearly $6.4 million from 34,275 donors (triple the number it registered in 2013) during its second annual Omaha Gives event. The funds raised include $852,000 for various incentive awards.

New York

The Huguette Clark Family Fund for Protection of Elders, a donor-advised fund of the New York Community Trust, has announced grants totaling some $51,000 to help combat the growing national problem of elder abuse. Grantees include the San Diego State University Research Foundation, which was awarded $26,000 in support of training for adult protective services workers, and the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, which will receive $25,000 to help banks implement federal guidelines for sharing customer information with investigatory agencies in cases of suspected financial exploitation of the elderly.

Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh Foundation and Heinz Endowments have announced more than $320,000 in grants to twenty-two individual artists and organizations through the Advancing Black Arts in Pittsburgh Program. Launched by the foundations in 2010, the program is designed to support artistic risk-taking, outreach programming, career opportunities for individual artists, and strategies to promote organizational growth.

Texas

The San Antonio Area Foundation has announced a partnership with St. Mary's University to offer an educational program designed to strengthen the capacity of organizations serving the military community. The ten-month-long Nonprofit Management Certificate for Veterans' Service Organizations program will teach participants how to create an effective, sustainable organization; foster partnerships and collaborations among veterans organizations; and ensure that participating organizations are better equipped to maximize their impact on the community.

Utah

The Community Foundation of Utah has announced more than $50,000 in scholarships to thirty-nine high school and college students. Scholarships of between $100 and $5,000 were awarded through thirteen individual scholarship programs.

Washington

The Seattle Foundation has announced the creation of the Norman B. Rice Center for Community Partnerships in honor of the foundation's president and CEO, who is stepping down after forty years of public service, including two terms as mayor of Seattle, where he was the first African-American to serve in that position. The center, which has received support from the Bill & Melinda Gates and Northwest Area foundations, will work to advance collaborative, long-term systemic change in King County.
