Alabama

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced spring grants totaling more than $1.1 million to thirty organizations working to help people lead healthy lives and help children succeed in school. The grants were influenced by the findings of the foundation’s recently released EngAge report, which found that the percentage of people age 60 and older is rising at a rate faster than all other age cohorts in the state. To address the needs of that population, the foundation emphasized efforts to improve nutrition and access to healthy food.

California

The Santa Barbara Foundation has announced grants totaling $800,000 in support of eighteen organizations that provide safety-net services in the county. Recipients include the Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center, the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, People's Self-Help Housing, and the Mental Wellness Center.

Colorado

The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County has announced grants totaling $50,000 through its Open Door Fund in support of organizations serving the county’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Recipients include the Rainbow Elders program of the Aging Services Foundation, the Boulder County AIDS Project, Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley, and Bridge House.

Connecticut

Connecticut is facing an estimated budget deficit of $3 billion over the next two years, and several of its largest cities are also facing significant deficits. In recognition of the challenges that state of affairs poses for nonprofit agencies in the state, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced that it will distribute $1 million to assist qualifying nonprofits affected by an unexpected loss of government support, particularly in the areas of critical human services. In addition, the foundation also will provide capacity-building and sustainability strategies to help nonprofits address the changing funding environment in a strategic manner.

Illinois

The Chicago Community Trust and Goodcity Chicago have announced the sixty-four recipients of the inaugural Acting Up awards, which recognize and encourage Chicago-area residents to take action on their ideas to make their communities safer, stronger, and more dynamic. The $1,000 prizes will address needs in a variety of areas, including health care, gun violence, open spaces, and arts and culture.

Iowa

The Jasper Community Foundation in Kellogg has awarded grants totaling nearly $79,000 to organizations in Jasper County, the Newton Daily News reports. Recipients of the grants, which range from $800 to $11,500, include Friends of Lynnville Public Library, Kid Assist, Monroe Recreation Park, and the Newton Community Theater.

Kansas

The Kansas Health Foundation has announced a $50,000 grant to the Emporia Community Foundation to help provide aid to those affected by the tornado that touched down in Eureka earlier this month. Since 1991, KHF has made tornado relief contributions totaling more than $900,000.

New York

The Hartsdale-based Westchester Community Foundation, a division of the New York Community Trust, has announced grants totaling $552,000 in support of nonprofits in the county. Recipients include the Aisling Irish Community Center, Jazz Forum Arts, Rivertowns Village Green, and RSHM Life Center.

Pennsylvania

The Stockton Rush Bartol Foundation has announced twenty-four grants totaling $125,000 in support of arts groups in the Philadelphia metro region. This year the awards include $25,000 from the Philadelphia Foundation. The Bartol Foundation provides support to organizations that emphasize arts education and community-based arts programs.

Vermont

The Vermont Community Foundation in Middlebury has announced grants through its Innovations and Collaborations program totaling $176,111 to sixteen nonprofit organizations in the state, including $70,000 from its Giving Together program. The grants, which ranged from $10,000 to $18,000, include support for the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging, Greater Bennington Interfaith Community Services, the Vermont Community Garden Network, and Brattleboro Retreat.
