Dolly Parton receives $100 million Bezos Courage and Civility award

Dolly Parton returns to the National Press Club on February 1, 2009.

Musical artist and entrepreneur Dolly Parton is the latest recipient of a $100 million Courage and Civility award from Jeff Bezos, CNN reports.

This is the third iteration of the prize, which was previously given to chef José Andrés—who has used some of the award to feed Ukrainian refugees—and activist and CNN contributor Van Jones. Bezos and his partner, Lauren Sanchez, announced the award together. In an interview with CNN, Bezos also said he would give most of his money to charity, though he did not specify whether he would sign the Giving Pledge or where he would direct future gifts.

Parton is a longtime philanthropist focused on a variety of causes and awarded $1 million during the COVID-19 pandemic to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in support of its vaccine research efforts. It was partly used to fund development of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.

“Jeff [Bezos] and I are so proud to share that we have a new Bezos Courage and Civility Award winner—a woman who gives with her heart and leads with love and compassion in every aspect of her work,” Sanchez wrote on Instagram.

“I try to put my money where my heart is,” Parton tweeted. "I will do my best to do good things with this money.”
