Humane Society Silicon Valley receives $10 million for mobile clinic
Humane Society Silicon Valley has announced a $10 million commitment from Michelle Oates Detkin and Peter Detkin to expand access to veterinary care, especially for families impacted by economic challenges.
The largest gift in the organization’s ninety-two-year history will support the launch of a mobile veterinary clinic that will provide low- and no-cost veterinary care, with a focus on communities that are home to families with the least financial resources. In recognition of the multiyear commitment, the Animal Community Center — which provides medical support, adoption services, and a spay/neuter program and works to eliminate euthanasia for healthy and treatable animals — will be renamed the Peter Detkin and Michelle Oates Detkin Animal Community Center.
Michelle Oates Detkin is a retired attorney who previously worked in real estate law and commercial law at Intel. Peter Detkin is the founder of Intellectual Ventures and is a managing director at Sherpa Technology Group.
"We want to help people through their pets, by keeping families together," said Michelle Oates Detkin. "It’s about pets and people — the human-animal bond and about preserving relationships that sustain people — particularly now, with the future so uncertain for many. Equity demands of us as a community that families, regardless of income, are offered the opportunity to experience the value that having a pet in their home can bring."
