The Lois & Richard England Family Foundation in Bethesda, Maryland, has announced the selection of HANNAH HAHN as executive director. Previously, Hahn spent nearly a decade in the capital region’s philanthropic sector at the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation and the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation.
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in Chicago has announced the election of RUTH SIMMONS to its board of directors. Simmons is a president’s distinguished fellow at Rice University and senior advisor to the president of Harvard University focused on engagement of historically Black colleges and universities. She most recently served as president of Prairie View A&M University and is president emerita of Smith College and Brown University, where she became the first Black female president of an Ivy League school.
The McElhattan Foundation in Pittsburgh has announced the election of CAROLE A. BAILEY as executive director. Bailey most recently served as president and CEO of East End Cooperative Ministry, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing food and housing to people facing the impacts of poverty.
The Rockefeller Foundation in New York City has announced the selection of SIR ALOK SHARMA as this year’s climate and finance fellow. Sharma is a current member of parliament of the United Kingdom and a former president of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).
The Bridgespan Group in Boston has announced the appointment of DAN CARDINALI to its board of trustees. Cardinali is the former president and CEO of Independent Sector. He previously led Communities In Schools, a national organization dedicated to helping students realize their potential.
Borealis Philanthropy in Minneapolis has announced the selection of STEPH BEEMAN as program associate in the Emerging LGBTQ Leaders of Color Fund. Beeman’s recent work includes a relaunch of experiential outdoor learning programs for teens in Montana—including the development of customized systems, management of an annually changing cohort of volunteers and staff, and the cultivation of donor and funder relationships.
Day One in New York City has announced the departure of its founder, STEPHANIE NILVA, from the position of executive director after 20 years. Under Nilva’s leadership, Day One reached more than 10,000 youth each year through a combination of outreach, preventive education, leadership development, and legal and social services. LUCIA RIVIECCIO will serve as interim executive director.
The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health has announced the appointment of JAY BRADNER and JIM WEISS to its board of directors. Bradner is the former president of the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, where he led thousands of scientists at six research sites around the world in the discovery of life-changing medicines for patients. Weiss is the chairman and founder of Real Chemistry, which provides data-driven, tech-enabled, integrated marketing communications and commercial and medical solutions for the life science sector.
The Harvard Corporation in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has announced the departure of DAVID M. RUBENSTEIN after a six-year term that began in 2017. Rubenstein remains the founding chair of Harvard’s Global Advisory Council. Last year, Rubenstein was elected chair of the University of Chicago’s board of trustees.
The Atlanta-based Souls Grown Deep Foundation and Community Partnership has announced the election of LOLA C. WEST as chair of the board of directors. She is a co-founder of Westfuller Advisors, a leading Black-owned, multiracial, gender-diverse, independent advisory and wealth management firm, where she serves as chairwoman and chief culture officer.
PND notes the passing of PAUL G. BENEDUM, JR., the only lifetime appointed trustee of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, where he served for 46 years, leading the foundation for 22 years as board chair (1991-2013).
PND also notes the passing of JACK ANDERSON, a founding board member of the Chicago-based Joyce Foundation and a former board chair. Anderson was co-chair of the Joyce board of directors from 1984-1987, board chair from 1987-2011, and an emeritus director since then.
Finally, PND notes the passing of FLORENCE A. DAVIS, president and board member of the Starr Foundation. She was an accomplished lawyer, starting in private practice at Sullivan and Cromwell, then serving in several positions at Morgan Stanley for 10 years, before being hired as general counsel at AIG.
