University of Virginia Exceeds $3 Billion Campaign Goal

The University of Virginia, which in 2006 launched the public phase of the most ambitious capital campaign in its history, has announced that it has exceeded its $3 billion campaign goal.

Announced at this year's commencement ceremony, the completion of the Campaign for the University of Virginia was made possible with gifts from more than 220,000 donors, including more than 92,000 alumni, 29,000 parents, and 2,600 current and former faculty and staff members. In total, gifts to the campaign created more than 1,000 new endowments, including 514 endowed scholarships, 63 endowed professorships, and 97 endowed fellowships.

Other gifts made as part of the campaign will support the Betsy and John Casteen Arts Grounds, the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, and the UVA Health System, including the Emily C. Couric Clinical Cancer Center, the Claude Moore Medical Education Building, the Claude Moore Nursing Education Building and McLeod Hall, UVA Children's Hospital, and the Ivy Foundation Translational Research Building. Campaign gifts also will provide for new buildings for science, engineering, and medical research; teaching and learning facilities; a partnership with the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation to foster research collaboration between biomedical engineers and clinicians; renovations to the John Paul Jones Arena for basketball and major community events; the next phase of the Rotunda renovation project; and the Center for Contemplative Sciences, which is partnering with all eleven of UVA's schools to lead an exploration of the power of contemplative practices.

"In October 2006, under the direction of my predecessor John Casteen, and with the backing of the board of visitors, the university officially launched the most ambitious capital campaign in the history of public higher education, with a goal of raising $3 billion to support the people and programs of the university," said university president Teresa A. Sullivan. "All of us who care about this university and its future are incredibly grateful to everyone who has made the success of this campaign possible."
