Community Foundation Update (01/22/2022)
Alabama
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced the additions of DeLynn Zell, Ruffner Page, and Selwyn Vickers to its board of directors. Zell is co-founder and CEO of Bridgeworth, a wealth management firm headquartered in Birmingham. Page has served as president of McWane, Inc. since 1999. And Vickers serves as senior vice president of medicine and dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Arizona
In partnership with the David and Lura Lovell Foundation and Vitalyst Health Foundation, the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona has announced grants totaling $117,000 to advance the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) work of nonprofits in the region. Recipients include the Arizona Community Health Workers Association, the Drawing Studio, Job Path, and the Tucson Children’s Museum.
California
The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced the addition of Scott Kupor, Van Ton-Quinlivan, and Jennifer Urdan to its board and has named Judi Powell as its executive vice president of donor engagement and corporate responsibility. Kupor is managing partner of Andreessen Horowitz, a multi-stage technology venture capital firm. Ton-Quinlivan currently serves as CEO of Futuro Health. And Urdan serves on the California State Teachers’ Retirement Board as well as several institutional investment committees, and recently served as an external advisor and member of SVCF's investment committee. Powell previously served as vice president of program and strategic initiatives at Pacific Foundation Services and was the founder and principal of Seven Hills Philanthropy, a consulting firm.
The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has announced the addition of Bret Hewitt to its board. Already a member of the foundation’s investment committee, he also serves as board president of its affiliate, the Yolo Community Foundation.
Florida
The Gulf Coast Community Foundation in Venice has announced a $156,000 grant to Community Assisted and Supported Living (CASL) to help identify and secure housing and supports for individuals returning to the community after incarceration. In February 2020, the foundation partnered with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) to launch the Re-entry Navigator Program to help reintegrate individuals into the community. With funding from Gulf Coast, SCSO hired two full-time “re-entry navigators,” who connect inmates to reintegration programs before and after they leave the county correctional facility, helping them avoid re-incarceration. The latest funding will enable CASL to dedicate five beds for this project.
Georgia
The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has announced 29 grants totaling $1 million in support of small to midsize arts organizations. Combined with grants announced in October 2021, the latest awards double the foundation’s 2021 arts funding to a total of $2.06 million. Grants are made through the foundation’s Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund and support artistic pursuits across the sector including dance, design, film, journalism, music and vocal expression, theatre/stage performance, and visual arts. Recipients include 7 Stages, Flux Projects, Manga African Dance, and PushPush Arts.
Louisiana
Impact 100, an initiative of the Greater New Orleans Foundation, has announced that its $100,000 transformative grant was awarded to Hotel Hope. Impact 100, a giving circle now in its ninth year, is a group of more than a hundred local women who committed to giving $1,100 to make a single transformative grant to a local nonprofit. Recipient nonprofits will use the grant to deepen their impact and grow their network of supporters. Since its inaugural year, Impact 100 has granted out more than $1 million to nonprofits across the region.
New York
The Brooklyn Community Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2022 Spark Prize, which recognizes nonprofits advancing racial justice in the borough. The five winning organizations are the Arab American Association of New York, Black Women’s Blueprint, Brooklyn Movement Center, Groundswell Community Mural Project, and Weeksville Heritage Center. Each organization will receive $100,000 “no strings attached” awards at the foundation’s Spark Breakfast on March 8, 2022.
North Carolina
The Cabarrus County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Foundation for the Carolinas, has announced grants totaling $71,200 in support of 19 local projects that address a wide range of community needs across Cabarrus County. Recipients include the Cabarrus Partnership for Children, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas, Classroom Central, and Midway’s Opportunity House.
West Virginia
In recognition of National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on January 9, the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation and its regional affiliates presented appreciation boxes for the Mid-Ohio Valley’s law enforcement officials. Local volunteers delivered the boxes personally and expressed appreciation to a sampling of law enforcement officers across the foundation’s 11-county service region. The boxes included locally made potato chips donated by Mister Bee Potato Chips in Parkersburg; a cookie in the shape of a badge baked by area citizen Mary Wright; a pepperoni roll from JR’s Donut Castle in Parkersburg, hand sanitizer, and a thank-you note from the foundation.
