Community Foundation Update (01/29/2022)
Arizona
The Arizona Community Foundation has announced that president and CEO Steve Seleznow will retire from his role at the foundation at the end of March 2023 after 13 years. During his tenure, the foundation has seen its assets under management increase from $473 million in 2011 to more than $1.4 billion in 2022.
California
The San Diego Foundation has announced that it will award up to $14 million to community-based youth development and education-serving nonprofits offering summer extended learning programs to students in the San Diego Unified School District. The deadline to apply for a grant is noon on February 18.
Connecticut
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced seven grants totaling $175,000 in support of a broad range of state and local public policy and advocacy efforts. The first such grants in the foundation’s history are aimed at helping to make affordable, stable, and higher-quality housing more accessible to low-income residents of color or those encountering barriers to housing access. Recipients include the Center for Leadership and Justice, Open Communities Alliance, Partnership for Strong Communities, and Regional Planning Association/Desegregate CT.
Illinois
The Community Foundation of Central Illinois in Peoria has announced the opening of a new Arts Capacity-Building grant program to assist nonprofit arts groups in rebuilding organizational capacity to better serve their constituencies and fulfill their mission. The program consists of $50,000 in available funds and allows organizations to apply for up to $10,000 to be used toward projects that result in tangible, concrete results. The grants are specifically for organizations whose primary mission and purpose is to provide programming or support in one of five categories: arts education, performing arts, music and cultural activities, sculpture/visual fine arts for display, and/or art therapy.
Kansas
The United Way of Reno County, Hutchinson Community Foundation, Greater Hutch, and the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce have announced a $50,000 grant from the Schmidt Foundation in support of childcare system improvements across Reno County. The grant to the United Way of Reno County will be leveraged with $40,000 in additional funding from donor advised funds at the Hutchinson Community Foundation, $10,000 from the Davis Foundation, and an economic development grant from Greater Hutch and the Hutch Chamber.
Michigan
The Jackson Community Foundation has announced a $5.1 million bequest in support of the Dahlem Conservancy through the Berlet Fund for Nature. The largest gift in the foundation’s history is from the estate of Jackson resident and lifelong conservationist Myrna Berlet, who died in February 2021 at age 80. After receiving degrees in biology and zoology, Berlet and her first husband, Walter Berlet, built a nature film business. She also taught at Jackson College for 32 years.
The Community Foundation of Greater Flint has announced six appointments to its governing board. Joel Feick is a reporter and former news anchor and a community advocate for people with disabilities. Morris Peterson, Jr. played 11 seasons in the National Basketball Association after helping lead Michigan State University to the NCAA championship in 2000. Ezra L. Tillman, Jr. is an ordained minister. Ishika Gupta, a senior at Grand Blanc High School, has served on the foundation’s youth advisory committee for six years. Dawn Hiller is a retired community volunteer and worked closely with foundation staff during the Flint water crisis. And DeAndra Larkin currently serves as chief of staff to the Office of the President at Mott Community College.
New Jersey
The Northern New Jersey Community Foundation in Hackensack has announced a grant of $1,500 to City Green. Awarded through the foundation’s Climate Action Mobilization Project, the funding was directed by Visions Federal Credit Union to address food insecurity in the region.
North Carolina
The Foundation for the Carolinas has announced that its president and CEO, Michael Marsicano, will retire in January 2023, which would conclude 23 years with the Charlotte-based foundation. During his tenure, the foundation has seen its philanthropic assets increase from $245 million in 1999 to nearly $4 billion in 2022.
Ohio
The Greater Cincinnati Foundation has announced the promotions of Rasheda Cromwell and Meghan Cummings, effective April 1. Cromwell, currently senior director of community strategies, will serve as vice president of community strategies, while Cummings, who has spent the past decade with the foundation’s Women’s Fund, the last six as executive director, will serve as vice president of civic advancement.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Foundation has announced grants totaling nearly $500,000 in support of dozens of animal welfare programs across the state. Awarded through the foundation’s Program for Animal Welfare (PAW), the funding will help address a range of uses including low-cost vet care for pets of low-income households, preparing animals for adoption, and wildlife rehabilitation. Recipients include the Potter League for Animals, Animal Rescue Rhode Island, CoyoteSmarts, and Foster Parrots.
Texas
The Dallas Foundation has announced that its Mary M. Jalonick Women’s Philanthropy Institute awarded more than $300,000 in grants to five local nonprofit organizations working to improve the lives of residents. Jubilee Parks and Community Center will receive $150,000, while ACT for Justice, Girls Embracing Mothers, Hope Supply Company, and Metrocare Services will each receive grants of $40,000.
